Got the Otterbox Defender : )

I am still loving the defender case/holster, but I had to rip out the screen protector today. One of the reasons I bought this phone was how beautiful the screen is. The screen protector that OtterBox uses sucks the beauty right out of it. So I pulled it out. Now I'm happier.

+1 ... I did the same thing last night and like it much better... my issue is I do alot of fishing and I'm concerned about the saltwater and blowing sand gettign on the naked screen ....and me rubbing my finger on it scratching it... That being said, I saw a lot of postive reviews on the XO skin.... which I ordered today.

My intent is to do the XO skin with the defender case... I also ordered a Seidio Active case as well... I want to see what that foot print looks and feels like....

I also just had to rip out the screen protector.. holy was it annoying.. made the screen look about as good as my first color flip phone from 2003.

Why doe all these cases have a second cutout on the upper back portion of the device?
Not just otterbox, but other cases as well.
Not the second mic cutout, but the one for access to the battery cover it seems. Is this to help with NFC transmitting, etc?

I don't have such a cutout that you are referring to on my Otterbox Commuter. From the back, I have a cutout on the very top for the second mic, the camera, (from the bottom) the speaker, audio jack, and USB port. Nothing else.

Could your extra cutout be used to aid in the case's removal process, perhaps?

Sure do..!! I'm not a case guy to begin with but I almost dropped it a few times already because of the slickness WITHOUT a case.... so I did a little looking around and pound for pound I liked the Otterbox Defender for a few reasons...

Pro's:
- You can drop the thing out a helicopter and it would be fine (Please dont try this at home)
- I like how it fits on the phone...
- I like the rubber ridges on the back although still slick (maybe cause its new)
- I like the kickstand

Cons for Me:
- As mentioned above, the screen protector distorts the colors and allows for a build up of oil from your finguers to show very noticeably on the phone.... This drives me nuts...
- The rubber on the back and sides is still very slick even though its rubber... I dont know, maybe my hands sweat too much... but I'm going to try and wipe the rubber down with a rag and some rubbing alcohol

Kickstand???

I was using the Incipio Case from VZW black on black and even though I liked it I wanted a screen protector on my Nexus. I used the one from VZW just to keep something on it while I made my decision. I chose the XO skins and kept searching locally for one to see if I would like it but nowhere to be found. I finally stopped by my favorite VZW in the local BJ's and checked out what they had. Nothing new to my surprise so I asked to see the Defender even though I knew I would not like it because it was too big. The guy handed me one and I opened the box and slapped it onto my Nexus. WOW!!!! It is only marginally larger than the Incipio case and has a built in screen protector. I brought is for 37 dollars with my company discount and so far could not be happier with the decision. The case feels very good in the hand and I have the piece of mind knowing my phone is safe.

I also brought the battery charger with extra battery, so one of my concerns was how easy this case would be to take off and put back on. Well I can say it is not as easy as the Incipio but not that much more difficult. So my only concern now and maybe someone here can tell me from their experience with this case in the past is how well does the screen protector hold up.

Easily the best 40 dollars I have spent on the Galaxy Nexus so far......

No, unfortunately not. I bought the extended battery as well and was sad to find that it's not compatible. I'll end up selling the extended batt and buying the charger kit/plus extra battery.

Works for me too - I have not used the Otterbox Defender case with the standard battery as of yet.

After reading other posts here most people said it would work, so I got the case. The interesting thing is the email reponse from Otterbox told me it would not be compatible.

I just picked the Defender a few days ago and to be honest, it's not as big as I thought it was going to be. I needed something protective for my Nexus while mountain biking and this has been working great! I have another case (Incipio) that I use for everyday, but sometimes I've kept the Defender on and didn't even think to use the Incipio that day.

The only downside to the case is the way the screen protector makes the screen look. It gives it a matte look and isn't as sharp, but that was expected.

I was thinking of getting the defender and popping off the anti gkare and jist putting another screen saver on. The anti glare screen makes the screen look awful.

That is actually why I ended up going with Otterbox. I think they did a great job at keeping the case thin. Plus it fits the phone when I use my extended battery.

I came from an HTC Thunderbolt with the extended battery, so the Defender is thin to me...haha!

I have had my Defender on and off a few times since I put the Xoskin protector on, and I have to say the antiglare on the Defender is starting to annoy me. Saw a post where someone had carefully cut the Defender screen out of the shell and I might just do that.
With both layers covering the Nexus screen you do have to "stroke" it more firmly to get it to go, and it almost makes thumb typing in the "vertical mode" impossible, although the "horizontal mode" seems to work fine for my clumsy attempts. Seriously, other people might not have a problem with it and they for sure would have more practice at it anyway.

The screen is just glued on. It pops right off. No cutting needed.

the built in rainbow screen protector and the moving parts loose port flaps at the bottom are a dealbreaker. i'm going with the Seidio Active X Silicone Exoskeleton.

I purchased the Otterbox Defender for my SGN today and returned it a few hours later. Big thumbs down on this case for three main reasons:

1. The screen protector is perfectly awful. Two reasons for this. a) The protector plastic is not clear in the least. Rather, it has a built-in orange peel effect that fuzzes the SGN screen and also diffracts the light so that it introduces off-colors in a weird sparkly way. I know that any screen protector will impact the visual quality, but this went much too far. Cheap adhesive protectors look better. b) The screen protector plastic doesn't sit flush on the SGN screen. So there is a gap. That severely impairs the touchscreen experience for obvious reasons.

2. The main retaining clip to keep the phone in the holster was extremely hard to operate with one hand. I really had to push on it in just the right place and pretty hard to release it. Getting the phone into the holster was no picnic either. Again, had to push very hard on it. Because the retaining clip was so tight, it also extremely loud when clipping in. I used a Defender on my Bionic (b/f dumping it back at Costco) and it wasn't this hard to operate.

3. The whole assembled case was just much too big. I know the whole point is that this is the best protection you can get, but it just takes away from the phone experience too much. It's nice to have such a powerful phone is a slim package. The Defender makes the encased phone into a beast in your hand, and the holster on the belt on exacerbates it. It turns a Porsche 911 into Chevy Suburban. Each has their own merit, but I don't want to turn one into the other.
