Got the Ultra from Verizon yesterday, phone won't charge unless I turn it off?!

Yep so I bought the Verizon Ultra and I'm already facing issues. When I plug it to the charger it shows its charging but it doesn't go up. It even goes down in percentage. I turn it off and that's when it actually charges. I updated to the latest software available. Cleared the cache partition. Have rebooted it a couple times. Nothing works. I didn't want to go exchange it, but is that the only option left?

If you just got it yesterday then do a quick factory erase and test the charging before installing apps and setting up your info.

I always have a habit of erasing a fresh out of box machine whether phone or computer. I guess from my days working with PC and laptops for IBM.

When it's turned off, does it charge properly, or slow?

It almost sounds like a bad USB cable. Normally that shouldn't be an issue with a new phone, but some people go right to whatever old cable they were using before (myself included), so I wouldn't rule that out.

Try using the cable and charger that came in the box. If the problem persists then I would do a warranty exchange.

Do you have a wireless charge pad?? When turned off, if it charges with cable AND charge pad, I would say software. Them if after erase it still doesn't charge when on, I'd swap it.

Hi Jesus
Like others mentioned , you using stock cable and charger ? Have you tried others cable and chargers ? Try different wall outlet also, and safe mode , don't forget make sure charger port is clean .

This is very true.

Yeah sorry for not adding that. I have used the original charger that came out of the box. When its off it charges really fast. I've tried multiple outlets as well and the issue persists. I even tried it on my car's charger with the Samsung fast car charger and cable I have, and if I have Bluetooth and GPS on it shows its charging but instead it dies.

I would try to exchange it. Since you'll need to factory reset it (either as part of them wanting to troubleshoot it first, and/or as part of the exchange process), I would first go ahead and backup everything, remove the SD card if you have one, and factory reset. Go through the setup and see if the problem persists. Normally this is a hardware problem, but yours sounds more software related and this may actually fix it. No promises, but you'll be doing so anyway and you have nothing to lose. When you set it back up, do so as a new device without restoring any apps or backups. When finished with the setup process, charge the phone from something less than 50% (so I would suggest draining the battery to there with some gaming or whatever before the reset) before adding any additional apps and such. See if the charging speed is normal. If it is, then finish the setup.

Update; The issue seems to have solved itself. My phone is back to charging. But what I see is that the phone doesn't seem to charge as fast as is advertised, only when the screen is off it charges pretty quick but when im using it in any way, it charges 1% every 3-4 minutes. Is that normal?

Sometimes restarting phone or going in and out of safe mode fixes little things like this . I haven't paid attention what it charges at a minute , I go away and 10 minutes like almost 50 percent charge at 15 or 20%

I really didn't pay attention to it either until I bought this one and it didn't charge at first. But then when it started charging it didn't seem fast while being used even lightly. If I leave the screen off yeah it charges stupid fast. I just wanted to make sure I don't have a faulty unit before the 14 days are up lol.

Understand, same I don't use my phone while charging only while it's off the screen , I have to pay attention next time .

Awesome bro if you could just give me your findings whenever I'd appreciate it. I've been knowing you for years since the s9 and im glad you're still here and hoping you're doing good

Phones don't fast charge while you're using them.

I haven't used Samsung, but that is normal on LG phones and I suspect the same in your case. Throttling the charge rate with the screen on reduces the amount of heat buildup that would otherwise result from the combination of charging plus using the phone. Heat can kill a battery, so keeping it low increases overall lifespan.
