GPS sometimes freezes and won't lock. The little symbol sometimes just faces right and sometimes faces up but does not pulse. If I reboot the phone it will lock within 10 seconds. I have been using just the standalone setting.Seems inconsistent if I leave the GPS on or off during the day.Have tried activating the other two settings and it does not seem to make a difference. When it locks on it is very accurate.

Could be due to your cell phone signal. Some phones operate on autonomous and some on assisted GPS. If you have bad reception and your phone uses assisted GPS you could also have trouble getting a GPS signal.
If you want to check which one you have: Go outside with a clear view of the sky. Run your GPS. Acquire the satellites. Then turn off the cell phones radio signal. If you immediately lose the satellites, you are in Assisted GPS mode. If you keep the satellites then the GPS is working in Autonomous Mode and will work without a cell signal.
