GPS now intermittent?

It becomes a problem when you are moving, using navigation. It loses you for a couple seconds, makes the nav run choppy and can make you miss a turn. Not to mention, its just not how the thing should be working.

Im not having any nav probs either, used it for bout an hour yesterday and prolly 40 this morn. I only noticed the satellite droppage due to this thread.

bjboucher describes the GPS problem well. I did a considerable amount of testing yesterday. GPS definitely isn't working right since the update. My wife's phone hasn't been updated and still works. My brother updated yesterday. Now his GPS malfunctions like mine. I went to various Verizon shops and experimented with demo phones that had and had not been updated. All the phones that had been updated had identical GPS malfunctions. All those that had not been upgraded worked correctly.

Maybe some developer who should be doing something else for a living decided a great way to extend battery life would be to repeatedly cycle GPS off and on!

I did notice this gps issue right after the update. I was checking to see if gps would lock like the leaked mr2 and thats when I noticed google nav's arrow won't spin as smoothly as I turn and face different directions.

Sure enough blue circle appears every few seconds while using nav on a 30 minute drive. Gps drops satellites constantly like others have stated.

I am this close to re-flashing the leaked mr2. That one worked well with the exception of one shutdown after running for 120 hours. no reboots on this version mr2 yet but then again I have been doing bat pulls and restarts trying to fix gps.

I am probably going to do the same thing. I just hope it works and doesnt check the build number and wont re-install an older one. I definitely prefer the June build to this one.

Also, I've said this before but I'm willing to bet this is happening to everyone with the newest update but they just arent noticing it since it is fairly subtle. You have to really stare at the screen if you're just using google maps or nav to see the blue ring grow and shrink. Not everyone uses GPS status to see that clearly we are losing satellites WAY too often.

Tried a master reset for giggles and it was no help. My signal strength seems a bit better so maybe it helped there but my GPS is doing the same thing. Think I might see if the June MR2 leak wil re-install on my phone tonight.

nice please keep us informed

It won't let you go back. I just might have to research rooting.

In that case I'll keep this update since gps works decent enough. Update-wise maybe it's an advantage when gb comes out, because theres a good chance this allows ota.

I don't mind flashing full ruu's but it'll be nice if I didn't have to

I was curious about this so i went for a drive with my gf. Told her I had to check out *techno-babble*. Her eyes glazed over and reluctantly agreed. She drove while i stared at my navigation. (She already thinks I'm weird so she didn't even question me. :D).

Anyway, GPS Status does seem to show a glitch every few seconds and drops all satellites BUT when it comes back, it is still connected to how many it had locked on to before. If it locked onto 5 before the blip, it came back locked onto 5. It doesn't look like my phone is losing the connection so it is not re-searching for satellites to lock on to. So in Google navi, my position never turned into a blue circle, always moving smoothly like before.

Seems like a solid 7-10 second lock, then goes out for half a second or so and comes back still connected, not searching each time.

BTW, I've been trying to avoid a full system reset like the plague. I'll do it one time when GB comes out but I refuse to do one until then. LOL

This is a cross post in the impact thread. Probably should have been put here:

I finally got the update Wednesday morning 7/13, and installed it. I didn't really have GPS issues before, but now the initial GPS lock just takes 2 - 4 seconds, not the usual 20 or so. Using GPS status, the satellite data at times 'blinks off' for a second. Wednesday afternoon I took off on a motorcycle trip of about 200 miles of winding mountain roads. Then returned about 250 miles today. I use the Thunderbolt as my main GPS. I alternated between CoPilot, Google maps, and Trapster (Google maps). In all cases, it worked flawlessly. Zoom way in on the CoPilot maps had it following the curves in the road and the changes in speed as close to real time as I would ever want, with not hesitations or anything. So while the data dropouts in GPS status are concerning, for me it is a non-issue. And the faster lock is awesome for me.

Just to add info, I finally installed GPS Status and can confirm groups of satellites dropping out and back in quickly every few seconds.

Moreover, went on a fairly long trip yesterday and really finallly noticed the stupid 'blue ring of death' that surrounds the car icon when the satellites drop out, also it was choppy and the car icon's location would suddenly jump to a new spot when they decided to come back in, I can see how this would be a huge PITA if it makes you miss a turn!

OTA update fail

I noticed this issue right away after the last update since I use navigation all the time. I thought I was just imagining things or that it was just me. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone and hope someone is able to figure this out.

OTA update fail

You nailed it right on the head!

You described the problem I am having perfectly.

Such a huge PITA for someone who uses the GPS alot.

I updated to the latest firmware yesterday. I have never had any issues with GPS with my launch day T-Bolt. Now, after the update, when I go into the GPS Status app, the satellites seems to 'drop' out every few seconds. It will connect to 1, then 4, then 8, etc and all of a sudden all disappear as if you just started the application. I read that at least one other person noticed this behavior and commented that their navigation was a little strange as well. Can other check GPS Status and see if they have the satellites coming and going every few seconds? The best I can see is they all show up as connected for 10 seconds at a time. Then it will drop them all and start connecting as if you just turned GPS on. Any ideas or similar experiences?

I had nothing but trouble with the GPS on my TB from day one (3/17) - and I have complained about it on this forum ad nauseam....... BUT the latest OTA has completely fix it for me, my GPS is now SUPER fast at locking on my position AND is accurate to several feet.

I have used mine for about 13 hours of driving in the mountains of North Georgia and North Carolina since the update. Before the update it worked fine. After the update it is working fine PLUS it locks much quicker.
It is still following me very accurately on the roads. I have used it now with Trapster, Google maps. Google navigation and CoPilot. I noticed yesterday when using CoPilot, that if I was using routing, and I made a turn that did not agree with the software, the software knew I had taken a new route within 10 - 20 feet. Pretty accurate from what I could tell. Maybe more accurate then it ever had been. Yes there is the blinking off when using GPS status, which I don't like to see, but it is very functional for me.

I sympathise for those having problems, but am not sure the phone is having issuses for sure, might possible be the app?
It seems this isnt all one sided it appears there are quite a few who see the dropping sats in the app but have had no adverse affects. I for one Lock faster and more accurate, even in a high magnetic field. I propose a master reset, possibly exchanging the phones for new ones.

I actually performed a factory reset after the update to clear up some connectivity issues with My Verizon (which were resolved) but the GPS issues remain...

Same here, factory reset doesnt help the GPS issues. Hopefully the next update brings it back to normal.
