Hey, does anybody else have the problem that whenever you set a picture as a contact photo, the picture turns grainy after a few minutes? I think it has something to do with Google or Facebook contact syncing, but it does it even for people who have neither accounts... any workarounds?

I'd like to know as well. They look great at first then turn to (well, you know...)

seems like the issue is with Google Contacts syncing. Apparently, if you go to your gmail account settings, and turn off the setting that automatically gets your contacts photos, it may solve the problem..

another problem w/ sync, it's deleting any custom ringtones I make and resetting them to a default one. really annoying. any solutions?

The problem is related to syncing google contacts. It replaces your higher res photo with the downsized icon in google contacts. The only way around this and keeping syncing is to create a new Phone contact on your phone, selecting the option to get contact photo from phone and then link the new contact to the google contact. I finally gave up after somehow getting all my contacts deleted, and made my new contacts as phone contacts, choosing not to sync google contacts.

Same thing happened to me. I tried logging out of facebook and logging back in since they were facebook pictures. But now only half my pictures show up. The other half of them are grayed out. and how do i stop google contacts from syncing. I've been going to settings > accounts > google ut i can only press sync there's no button to unsync or stop sync :(

When I go to that location, I have options to sync contacts, sync gmail, sync picasa web albums and sync calendar. Not sure about what is differenct from my setup and yours.

thats what mine looks like. idk what to change?

I think this has to do with htc sense. This has always been a problem from when they first released sense.

^^^ I agree, I think it has something to do with Sense. I didn't really have this issue with my Droid X or D2G. And I'm not having the issue currently with my Nexus S but i did have it with my EVO.

Quick workaround...

I have had this annoying issue with my HTC Sensation since I got it. Also, Facebook pictures don't look exactly right eather on my phone. A bit pixelated. I guess that the resolution at which that Caller ID placeholder is showned on my higher resolution screen is a bit higher than Facebook profile pictures.

Ok, so I've made some digging around this problem and it seems that it's Google related. They resize your cropped contact picture to a generic 95x95 px thumbnail for storage on their servers. Hopefully, now that Android 4.0 Ice Screen Sandwich is soon to be released and from what they showed at the presentation, they are going for large contact icons. So it should be fixed soon.

The only easy work around this one would be to stop syncing your contacts to Google and Facebook if you want to completely custumize what contact picture you see. After you've got all your contacts synced of course, disable the above mentioned and then replace the images with your own.

And not to forget this... For you to be able to choose what get's synced, you have to have Auto-Sync enabled. I don't think this is a Sense related setting.

Of course, this is not a permanent fix to the problem, because as soon as you need to sync contact information again for whatever reason, all your work will be in vain. So, if you are not lazy :) you should go ahead and make a Phone contact for each person you want to change tu picture and then link them to Google/Facebook.

For me, it was a problem with my sister's FB security settings. She was the only one in my contacts that would be listed under FB but not under FB for HTC sense. So her picture would get pulled from the regular FB app and was grainy. SO I had her look at her security settings and turns out she had panicked about a security problem with FB and locked everything out. So I am not sure which setting it was but it had to do with letting external apps access your page, in this case FB for HTC Sense. As soon as she lightened her security setting, she appeared as a suggested contact link on my phone notice tab (FB to FB for HTC sense) and I clicked yes and bam, clear picture.

This may have already been discussed somewhere in this thread, but I was still confused when I got done reading it and had to figure it out on my own, so please forgive me if I might be repeating info...

I wanted to use the Facebook user pics for my contacts because I don't have pics of all of my contacts on my phone, but that pixelated look was driving me nuts. I fiddled with the phone off and on for like 12 hours before I finally was able to fix it by syncing contacts from Facebook for HTC Sense instead of Facebook for Android, Google or Gmail. (Settings> Accounts & Sync> and then tap on "Facebook for HTC Sense" instead of the little sync icon, so you can choose just to sync the contacts.)

Also, I wanted to use a Facebook widget on my homescreen, which I couldn't find for the Sense version, so I got the Android version from the Market and use that widget, but sync contacts only on the Sense version. Ugh... hope that makes sense... it's hard to explain, and couldn't they have come up with something to call it other than "Sense"?

One last thing... I use the widget for people on the homescreen that just shows 3 icons. Does anyone know how to fix the thingie where you have to scroll the contacts? Either the top icon's head is cut off, or the bottom one's name is cut off. I had the first Incredible and didn't have this problem, and it kind of bugs me.

This is a really great forum, I'm glad to have found it. :)
