Green Tint?

Last night was the first night I stayed up in bed with all lights off and was web browsing on my 5A. I noticed that certain dark gray backgrounds have a slight greenish tint on the display, this is both with and without night light enabled. I currently have dark mode enabled on the device and this greenish tint does not appear on the pull down notification shade nor on the app drawer as these are truly black backgrounds.

I've read about some users having this occur not only on the 5A but on the 5 and 4XL. Is this just something to expect on OLED displays and not something that could be fixed with software?

In my case it doesn't seem severe but I have seen other people post images where it's really obvious. Additionally, the top of the display does seem to have some light bleed but again this is only noticeable on dark backgrounds at night.

I'm not sure if this is something worth RMA'ing the device for as everything else works fine and in the daylight there's no issues but at the same time, you kind of pay a certain price for something and expect it to work well. I had the 4A prior to this phone and didn't encounter this at night so I'm not sure what to think of this.

Any current owners of the Pixel 5A or any other smartphone users experience this issue?

I have not seen this but will look for it going forward.

Checked for this and did not see the green-tinted screen when viewing gray objects on my Pixel 5a.

I searched for gray objects, even Googled gray color palettes and gray paint samples to get a wide variety of gray colors.

Perhaps post a link to some images from sites where you see this effect.

For me I notice it on the Googles Messages app and Whatsapp as both don't use truly black backgrounds. I would need a second device to take a picture of my screen.

In the end I can live with it as I don't tend to use my phone a lot at night. I guess my concern is mostly is if I have a faulty screen that perhaps requires the device to be RMA'd. I'll try to see if I can capture it with my wife's iPhone tonight.

Aside from this small thing, I love this phone!

Take a screenshot. Simultaneously press the power button and volume down button.

Post the image of it here.

I doubt that problem will change any over the life of your phone.... it's probably just a matter of if you can live with it ;)

Sometimes things like that are hard to "unsee"

I haven't seen this on my Pixel 5 either but I'll look for it as well. Keep us posted on what happens!

Any update on your situation, OP?

Well I contacted Google support twice about it and both times I received the same response that this is normal behavior for what they described as rainbow banding that is to be expected on rigid displays such as those that have been used on the Pixel A line of phones. Funny enough though I did not notice this on my 4A. They said there was no need to RMA the device and it is absolutely normal behavior.

Oddly either my eyes have gotten used to it or the severity of the tint is not strong enough for me to notice it so much. Regardless I don't tend to use my phone often in bed in the pitch black (when it's most notable) so it is something I can live with.

I can't say I'm impressed with Google's support services for their hardware. Never have been and I think others have had the same experience.

Still, I do love this phone and the plan is to stick with the A series going forwards but darn it if those Pixel 6 series phones don't keep looking interesting! But I'll be patient on purchasing one of those.

One of my favorite features of the 5A is this battery that just won't quit! Seriously impressed! And I love the dark green color!

Thank you for updating us on what's happening!

I'm so glad you are still enjoying your phone and that you've either gotten a costumed to it or it's not so severe to the point that it's glaringly obvious.

Yes, I've heard other users not have a fun time with Google customer support. It seems to be an issue even more nowadays. Even when I ordered my Pixel 5, there were a few hiccups along the way.

Glad you are loving your phone! I too think the Google Pixel 6 line is looking sweet! Maybe one day...
