Group messaging issue between S4 and iPhones

A couple weeks ago I switched from an iPhone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I absolutely love it!! But, I have noticed a problem with receiving group messages from my friends who still have iPhones... I can send a group message and my friends will get the message but I don't get their reply because their iPhones still think my number still is an iPhone, also. Even though I unregistered my iPhone and turned off my iMessage..

I turned off my iMessage when I first got my new phone and yesterday I realized that I need to unregister my iPhone as well. So that was pretty recent, so should I wait a couple days for it to kick in or is there something else wrong??

When I group message friends with iPhone and Android phones, only the Android phones get the message. I have to send iPhone sheep individual messages, which is a PITA!

Yeah, I can get the first message of a group message from an iphone but after that I don't get any others. Other iPhones still think my number still is an iphone too

Acually I don't think I did lol does anyone have an opinion on using another messaging app?? Like Handcent SMS?? would that work?

I have used GO SMS pro for awhile now. Sometimes it takes a second for it to incorporate the text into the group discussion, but it works well.
