group sms, mostly numbers

My school principal has sent out several group texts.
Her name will show up, but every reply is just coming from a phone number, even though the "repliers" are in my contact list.
It's really annoying!

For instance:
Cherie: everyone needs to blah, blah, blah
406 123-4567 -ok, got it
406 987-6543-please explain more
ETC

The originator shows up as a name, but everyone else, even though they are in my contacts, shows up as a number.

Are there any subtle discrepancies between the numbers in the messaging app and the numbers saved in the Contacts app? For example, are they preceded by a "+1" in the Contacts app?

Yes, there is a +1 preceding the number in the message, but not in the contacts app.

Try adding the +1 to the number of one of your contacts who messages you frequently. If that gets their name into the Messaging app, then you may have to add +1 to all of your contact numbers.
