Group Text Message Downloads

I got a few group text messages, some with pictures from an Iphone user, that I was not able to download. I found this support question from Verizon which explains I need to be on a cell signal and not wifi to receive. Since this answer is a couple years old I just wanted to know if it's still valid? I'm on Verizon with my Moto E and I use the standard Verizon message app
