GSM capabilities

guys, just remember that in some countries in Asia such as Japan, South Korea and China, Sprint CDMA works just fine. if you ad even tri-band GSM to it, it does become a true world phone :)

I went to Korea with a non 3G quad band GSM phone and it did not work. Their GSM is only on the UMTS 2100 range (which the Photon supports). I was amused that my Sprint phone worked, but not my quad band GSM phone...

Hello all! I was wondering if there was anyway to use a domestic SIM card in the phone? I know we probably cant just pop in a T-Mobile SIM card in out of the box, so what can be done to the phone in order to allow use of a domestic SIM card in the phone?

No. It is locked to Sprint domestically, unlocked only overseas.

I have had world phones on Sprint (not Android, of course) for years, and never have had one that was locked.

Did you get em unlocked straight outta the box? Or you had to call Sprint ?

Im interested in getting one unlocked\Off-contract & use it as GSM phone with my STC SIM card (in Saudi Arabia)

I understand that it is lock domestically. My question is, is there anyway that it could be UNLOCKED for domestic GSM use? Has this been done before on any type of "world phone" with dual CDMA/GSM capabilities?

I live in Asia. If i buy the phone from Amazon and have it shipped to me and i just insert my sim card would it work?Or it has to be activated in the USA by Sprint first? I love this phone, please HELP! Thanks.

My BB Tour worked fine with my ATT sim card (prepaid and also worked the "comicel" network in Colombia)

On this Photon, I show a red triangle in my phone when i insert the ATT Sim Card

But when i go to a specific place on the phone I am able to read the sim card number with the 3 sim cards

1. The sim card that comes with the phone I can read the number of the sim card

2. I can read the sim card number of the prepaid ATT

3. I can read the sim card number of the "comicel" (colombian sim card)

I tried one of the unlock companies that say they can unlock the phone but they wanted a 15 digit meid number (i think).

i entered *#60# or similar number earlier today
and i came up with 2 numbers and neither were the 15 digits required by the company

i just tried it

it gives two numbers for Meid

*#06# (and hit call on your phone)

A000002C5322XX (xx being a letter and a number) Hex

22684354604054483xx (xx being both numbers) Dec

The unlock web site wanted a 15 digit number and the first number is only 14 digits

so i do not know what the scoop is on how to unlock the phone for domestic use

I know my bb tour 9630 worked fine with the ATT card with no unlock code being necessary ( I was using this 2nd phone for backup)

I bought the other Motorola xprs and returned that phone, it would not see the att sim card
and i bought an unlock code (or tried too and they returned my monies, saying they could not provide a code. I will try the colombian sim card next month but i will buy an unlock code if they work

Lol

Have a good day

As i write this i remember the good old days with the Palm Treo

They could have been the King of the Smartphone market but they were not focused

"editors" can you help us with this issue please or thoughts

To get the phone's GSM IMEI, you need to switch the Mobile Network settings from "Any CDMA" to "Any GSM/UMTS". Then if you do *#06#, you will get the correct GSM IMEI.

thanks

after my post, Android Central announced that that a phone unlock from any of these unlock companies will not work, thanks (it need a hardware update to radio to allow it to work in the US

oh wow, so the phone doesnt have the required hardware that would allow it to work off of the domestic GSM towers?

Very interesting. I cant wait to get my phone in so i can put this theory to the test! If this is true, we could basically have service everywhere. Just need to buy a prepaid ATT/Tmobile SIM card and pop it in the Photon :)

Responses from Unlock companies (FastGSM) said to try it, they are wrong in response!

I think that is a correct statement, I will try my "Photon" on September 15 and will post my results both with the enclosed "sprint" sim card and the comicel sim, I will post my results on late September

Well, I bought a SIM in Germany from some company id never heard of, and it is working.
