[Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted!

ok, so AmonRA does not have an interface like Rom Manager. I was able to flash the radio update with AmonRA.

I do not intend on flashing any ROMS as it seems that there is always something that does not work.

There needs to be definitive guides with more pictures and video of the operations as alot of the terms get loosely translated around. Also a good block diagram of the memory structure of the phone would be helpful in understanding what is going on. I am learning and I work with Audio in the field where we flash radios over the vehicle bus. maybe one day...

No it does not have an interface, neither does clockwork. Rom manager is basically just an app that automates the manual process of downloading/flashing by using scripts in conjunction with the recovery.

The majority of roms work 100%, id say 110% because they improve and add more features even. Id definately suggest it. If you dont like it just restore a nandroid backup and youre set.

Sounds like youre a visual learner, id be willing to shoot tutorial videos but... I got no camcorder besides the evo. So unless anyone wants to send me one lol, you guys are gonna have to troll youtube for vids of suspect quality :/

HELP! yellow exclamation

I was trying to update the radios.....downloaded to the sd from the link in the first post......after it was done it asked to open in rom manager now I get the triangle and yellow exclamation point with the android dude

What have I done?

it sat like this for about 20 minutes finally did a battery pull and all is fine!

I upgraded from my Sprint Lovers ROM to the Odexed ROM - updated 06/05/11. I did a nand backup. I wiped the Davlik cashe and the regular cashe. I updated my radios via hboot as described by xHausx in the XDA forum. I then flashed the ROM via recovery using Amon Ra. Everything went smooth except that i lost my battery meter that has the % remaining and i also lost the wifi, blue tooth, flashlight controls that were in the drop down menu. I just want to know if there is way to get those back without having to restore back to my Sprint Lovers ROM?

OK, my Evo is running Unrevoked Forever. Confirmed S-OFF on the boot menu.

I'm trying to install the GB update following the instruction in this thread.

I tried another guide prior to that that did not work.

OK, so I get to the step where I boot into RECOVERY and the phone goes to the EVO screen and then right to a picture of a phone and a red exclamation point.

It sits here.. If I remember correctly from using recovery before, it should boot to another menu, no?

I'm taking all suggestions on how to get past this and either:
1) just fix the recovery menu in case I need in the future
or
2) get the GB update applied and still have root access (preferred)

I throw myself on the mercy of those that are better and more experienced at this than I am.

Flash a new recovery. Either clockworkmod or Amon_RA. I like Amon_RA, but it is totally up to you.

BTW you can flash from Rom Manager to either one of those recoveries.

How do I flash a new recovery if I can't get in to recovery?

You don't flash it from recovery. Two ways of going about it. (There is also ADB and the emulator method)

1. Flash from Rom Manager (its an app not recovery). You can flash clockworkmod or amon.

2. Install from the bootloader.

Here is Amon_RA that you use from the bootloader.

Amon_RA 2.3

Here is Clockworkmod from the bootloader

Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5

These need to be named PC36IMG only

During the phone/radio flash it is on the android system recovery screen and it says:

Build: RA-Supersonic-v2.3
Formatting: CACHE:...

It's been on this screen for 15 minutes. Should I be worried? Or patient?

I know it says 7-10 minutes for phone update, but I've now hit double that time..

Phone has rebooted once and then went to his screen.

(old posts below)

OK, Amon Ra seemed to work. Thanks!

I'm doing the nandroid now and then I'll start the process again. Wish me luck!

OK, I ran the update successfully. Started to reboot. Phone stuck at white 4G screen during boot.. waited...waited.. Will not come back.. I assume this is the infinite boot loop thing..

So, step 4a) - I was running 3.7 sense and only wiped dalvik and cache..Pretty sure that's what caused it.. I'm going to clear the data and try again.

OK, wiped all 3 items suggested in step 4 and still getting caught in the infinite boot loop.. Wait.. no, it's doing something now...

OK, the phone booted - YAY!

OK, data wipe = BOOOOOO! haha - Now I'll have to play 50,000 levels of angry birds again.

Is there any way to get all the data/settings back without screwing up the update?

restore data from nandroid or something?

Not sure about getting data back from your nandroid, but here is something you can do.

Make a nandroid of what you have now.

Restore previous nandroid.

Get Titanium Back or My Backup (root) and save the apps you have from the market + data. Not system apps.

Restore the nandroid you just made and then restore your apps + data.

Yeah it will take some time but at least you'll have your data back.

Your menu should pop up by now. Select reboot and it will go black and do its thing. Once done it will come back to your menu and that will be your finally reboot.

OK, THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm back up and running. Now on 2.3.3.

Nevermind the Android market hate below.. I just signed in to the web version of the market market.android.com/account and it lists all most of the apps I've ever downloaded. A couple of quick clicks and VIOLA! they apps will be sent right to your device for reinstallation.

Whew!

Amazon App store saves all the apps you've gotten thru them, I wish Android App store did the same.. It only saves the PURCHASED apps, apparently.. grrr.

Ah well.
