[Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted!

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

Those are files you used during rooting. Just copy those over to another directory or your computer. From bootloader you can flash the alternate recovery (Amon_RA).

[Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3 - xda-developers

Then try the combo update from RA after installing it.

Ok, I followed the tutorial on page one of this thread and it stated to wipe everything except the SD card and that's exactly what I did. So now I'll try this...thanks again.

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

Hey guys, when I followed the tutorial and wiped the data and then wiped dalvik cache the only other option for cache wipe I have is for the wipe cache partition which I didn't do initially, was this suppsed to be done?

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

You shouldn't need to do any of that...

Download this to the root of your SD card: http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=PC36IMG.zip

Power off phone. Then, boot into bootloader with volume down + power. Flash the zip and then reboot to recovery, and you should be all set.

- the Bootloader way - - Thanks Tiffany84 ^^
Place PC36IMG.zip on the root of your sd card.
Boot the phone into the bootloader by powering the phone down, then press the power and the volume down buttons at the same time.
Once the phone boots into the bootloader the phone will automatically recognize the zip file. It will ask if you would like to update, select yes and let it do it's thing and you will be good to go

Not sure I understand, I already had this on my SD card and it seems like I was told I only needed the combo radio update & the gingerbread update on the root of the SD card. I applied the gingerbread update fine when following the tutorial but it was the radio update that didn't seem to work.

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

CamelGuy and I are both suggesting you dump Clockworkmod recovery and install Amon_RA recovery. Tons and tons of people have problems flashing radio updates and other things on Clockworkmod but it generally goes flawlessly on Amon_RA. My instructions are to flash RA as your recovery from bootloader, and then flash the radio update from RA recovery.

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

You'll need to have your phone turned off completely before doing it. From bootloader you can get into recovery.

Make sure there's no PC36IMG.zip on your SD card first.

Ok, doesn't look like bootloader works for me. I power down my phone then hit volume down button then power button and hold it for a while and when I let go it just powers my phone back on very quickly.....ugghhh:(

Sorry for the delay, just got a minute left on lunch... Lol. Make sure to press and hold power+volume down at the same time. It won't work out of sequence.

Sorry to be a pain in the ass but do you have to hold them down for a while or just press them together at the same time then let go. Still no luck yet....

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

Hold both down at the same time until you see the bootloader screen, should take a few seconds, it'll load while you're still holding down.

It's definitely not working for me as I'm pressing them together. Also something I've noticed but my Evo sure powers on a hell of a lot quicker since running Gingerbread, is this something new or do I have something not right here? I've tried powering down at least 4 or 5 times and trying to get to the bootloader with no success.

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

It's like my phone almost powers back on instantly.....from when it's been powered off.

Re: [Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted

Try volume up + power that's the default way to get into bootloader, volume down + power is the remapped version.

Ok, I just bypassed that route and booted into the RA recovery via ROM manager and it looks like it was able to update the radio that way. Now when I look at the software info I'm running the 2.3.3 update, baseband ver. 2.15.00.05.02, build number is 4.24.651 CL61076 release-keys, software number 4.24.651.1, PRI version 2.15_003 and PRL version 60680. The only question I have is the kernel, isn't that part of the Gingerbread 2.3.3 update? The kernel has a date of Tue Jun 14???

Sneaking a look at the thread when I'm supposed to be working...lol. Looks good man. June 14 is just when the kernel was compiled. Also, if I'm not mistaken...it's also the date the second Gingerbread update was pushed to the EVO.

1. Download a Deodexed, or Odexed version of the rooted update from HERE. Deodexed is themeable and odex is not themeable, but some claim it to be a little faster. (Credit to xHausx :))

I just wanted to say fantastic guide! But one correction :-)

Odex is 100% themable. And yes, it is a little faster.

Sorry to tell you man, but you are incorrect. Here is a handy little guide explaining the difference between the two. :-)

No sir. :-) I am not incorrect.

It was widely popular to think odex wasn't themable. But it is not true and far from it :-) I have roms that are fully themed and are also odex, as well as handfuls of mods. That link has great info, but it is not 100% correct. Odex is themable. It requires an extra step to theme in dex/smali code, but to theme png or XML It is exactly the same as deodex. Here are some odex themes and roms that are 100% themable. Btw...I don't wish to start anything here. Just want to put the correct info out there :-)

Here is a guide on how to odex :-)

And in these links are both deodex and odex themes, including smali and png/xml edits. Enjoy!
