[Guide] How to get the Gingerbread OTA update and stay rooted!

My signal is so much better after this update. Hey, any of you guys know of a way to update the PRL data profile without using a Sense ROM?

Sent from my evil hideout. MUWHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

I followed this guide to upgrade the ROM but not the radios. Restored all my apps and everything seems to be working EXCEPT my battery life is in the crapper. 2.5 hrs on battery, barely any use at all and it's down to 50% already. In an area with full signal strength, Wifi, BT and 4G off. Any similar stories or possible fixes?

4. Boot into recovery and wipe data, dalvik cache, and regular cache. Wipe everything that you can pretty much, except for your SD card.
4a. If youre on a 3.70 update sense based rom, you may be able to wipe cache and dalvik only-Test it to see, worst case scenario is your boot loop, in which case you boot back into recovery and wipe everything like the rest of us.
Actually, I hadn't updated since the first rooted Froyo ROM, and I tried the GB update without wiping data. Had no problems, everything seems to work fine even without wiping and restoring all my apps and data. Maybe I just got lucky?

EDIT: I wasn't so lucky after all, I had a problem with the Camcorder application crashing, but it went away after a wipe/restore.

I updated both the radios and ROM (in the order recommended, i.e. radios first.) The battery life on the first charge was disappointing, about the same as before the update or maybe a bit worse (and it was always poor for me). On the second charge, the battery life has become nothing short of ridiculous, it seems like I'm going to grow old waiting for the battery to need charging.

If you are looking on how to make the Nandroid (back up) and flashing a Rom then look in my signature. If its the radios then its about the same. You can wipe both caches is you want. It will tell you to reboot and then give it time and once done reboot again and there you go.

I'm currently running the stable version of CM7 and wondering what, if any, of this I should do to get the most out of my phone and if I can flash any of the new stuff without wiping my phone.

ok Im rooted using unrevoked only to get the WiFi tether. So I just make back up, then recovery the flash zip and that's it?

First if you have and apps that you want to back up get titanium back up save just those. From recovery make your back up then wipe data, cache & dalvik. Now flash your rom & reboot

Wondering same thing. I think I just need to flash the radios and can ignore the rest but would like confirmation....

Yes, you can just flash the radio zip and be fine. Did it on VaelPak and Deck's build and had no problem with either. I would recommend using a Sense ROM and update your PRL and data profile after flashing the radio update to maximize signal reception. After that, just flash whatever ROM you want and you be golden. Just make sure to follow any and all install instructions, don't wanna make any mistakes. As always though, nandroids are your best friend...they have saved me so much trouble. :-)

I would, but my Evo is the only camcorder is have. If you mess something up, we can help you fix it. No worries.

The only thing youd want to flash would be the radios. The Rom is well... A totally different rom and yoll be on stock sense instead of AOSP CM7.

As long as youre on stock 3.70 software you can try it that way without wiping yes.

would this work if I am on clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 and I can't upgrade to 3.0.0.5 can I still do this rom?

Yes, you may have problems updating the radios though. Why cant you switch recoveries?

Thank you so much. I've been rooted for a while now but it was only so I could freeze the bloatware. I've never flashed a ROM as I've always been kinda intimidated by all the jargon and warnings about bricking, but you made this seem really noob-proof, which is exactly what I needed. Maybe I'll actually check out something other than stock and get more use out of my titanium backup and rom manager.

And by stock 3.70 you mean the original sense that came on the phone correct?

Yes, you must be in the stock Rom that came on the phone. Meaning you did nothing after you rooted.

Welcome! I hope you will start trying roms now, we'll be here if you got problems :)
