I'am having trouble when I put the beta key it says it's wrong I'am using window 7 I've tried several times and it still wont work I've unstalled htc sync and reboot the pc my evo hboot is 2.16/ radio 2.15/ kernel 2.6.35.10 / build 4.54.651 cl134969 reease keys soft ware 4.54.651.1 pri 2.15_ 003

If you are sure you have been very careful entering the beta key exactly, not confusing numerals and letters and observing capitalization, then you are among the few who are stuck with this problem. There doesn't seem to be a work around. The best you can hope for is that Revolutionary releases a version that no longer requires the key.

I am among those that the beta key is not accepted. I must have tried 50 times over the last few months.

I was trying to root my EVO today. It accepted the beta key and found my phone but after 45 min it was still trying to root. I don't think I did Amyhing wrong since it found my phone and accepted the beta key. Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: nevermind. missed the part about uninstalling HTC sync from my computer. just finished rooting!! :)

How do I root my evo its running 2.3

I don't want to seem rude or unhelpful, but I just don't understand posts like this. Read the guide "How to root the Evo 4G gingerbread via Revolutionary. It explains it all pretty clearly. If you have problems with the guide, then post a question about your specific problem.

1: Download and install HTC drivers HTC drivers

2: Download the rooting tool/program revolutionary Revolutionary, downloads are at the bottom of the page. You will need to enter in your Evo's serial number (under the battery) and be sure to save the beta key. You'll need it later.

3: Enable USB debugging (settings>applications>development>turn on USB debugging) and connect the evo to your PC as charge only

4: Un-zip the S-OFF tool and run the program, making sure to install the custom recovery when prompted. (unless you already know what you're doing and want to put Amon_Ra or TWRP recovery on there)

5: Download SuperUser and boot into recovery. To enter recovery: power off completely, yes battery pull while off too be sure, then hold volume down+power and from there go to recovery and confirm.

6: install superuser from recovery (you must put the Superuser zip on the SD card first, before booting into recovery. Or mount your SD card while in recovery to take it too your Evo. OR, download it too your phone before booting into recovery :p)

YOU ARE NOW ROOTED.

7: (optional but highly recommended) Make a nandroid backup via recovery and then put it on the PC just to be sure nothing will happen too it.

ok, i have a friends evo 4g. now as this is my first post (but 3rd different root (lg marquee and samsung captivate:cool:)) plz be easy on me:-[. i followed them to the letter, nothing failed. i have su and titanuim in the app drawer, but su has no root priveleges. :-\ when i reboot into recovery, it HAS s-off :D so i should be good, but when i try to access root apps, i have no permissions  so its like the root didnt fully take. i flashed su 3.0.7. twice from recovery. the friend does NOT want a custom rom, just to be able to "trim the fat" from his stockware. if theres anything i left out i will gladly provide more info just to get this done b4 i crack

Without going through the previous 247 posts to see if this has been said before, I had the same issue. I entered the beta key at least 20 times.

I finally found my error when I copied the beta key into Note Pad. I found what I had thought to be a lower case "L" was really an upper case "i". Once I made that little discovery, I typed it in correctly and everything went as slick as snot on a doorknob.

Try the Note Pad trick if you are stuck on the beta key.

Thank you so much. You are absolutely right. Same problem, what looked like lower case l (L) was really upper case I (i).

Haven't tried to root yet, but will post if all goes well.

Yes and this method was posted numerous times, and I remember seeing them, but I just didn't think that there could be such confusion over L and i. But many thanks again for posting this.

I tried using this root method but It's not working I DL'ed revolution and superuser I unzipped revolution to my desktop. Ran the program it opens cmd prompt and asks for my beta key I entered it command prompt and says beta key invalid. I had my Evo plugged in with Ian debugging enabled and it's set to charge only. I have the HTC drivers installed HTC sync is uninstalled. I've tried several times. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Can some one give me a hand please?

Here was my answer to this a few posts back:
