[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

all you need is the ruu download it includes the radio, the radio zip they offer is fro custom roms, but yes the ruu needs to be renamed to PG015IMG (should already be a zip, adding it while renaming will not let you do anything)

*update*

-------For those of you that have endured the frustration of updating to the latest software version (2.11.605.9) There is hope! Apparently with this software version, the bootloader is locked. And for some reason this version would not allow the "Revolutionary" rooting method to work. (I would imagine everyone with this problem had issues with not being able to get past Zerg Root. At least that was the problem I had)

Anyways, I got my phone rooted....heres how.

Per the instructions for using Revolutionary, install the driver as stated on their website. (Make sure HTC Sync is not installed on your computer)

Download Mecha_2.11.605.3.zip (I'm a newbie here so I cant post links, but I found it through Android Police but if u google it its easy to find, its hosted on multi upload) rename the zip file as PG05IMG and put on the root of your SD card (as you would in other rooting methods) and run the bootloader.

Once its booted and all that fun waiting is over and your TB powers back up, make sure to turn off all wireless connections to make sure OTA doesnt try to upgrade you. (I turned on airplane mode as soon as I could)

From there run Revolutionary as instructed from their website. Worked like a charm for me, and hope it does for all of you with this same problem.

I TAKE ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIT FOR THIS SOLUTION. Thank you for all you developers out there that make our phones able to be so much cooler and more enjoyable. I'm just glad I could help in this marginal way, and hope that someone will find it usefull. SPREAD THE WORD IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM --------

Thanks to Grapoidinc over at xda for these instructions, i just this this and now have root again

link to android police for ruu download here Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

I am not rooted and my phone automatically installed the 605.9 update. Will this method allow me to root with revolution or did u have to be rooted before this update applied for revolution to work.

upstreammiami helped me downgrade to .5 and use revolutionary and install droid factory. but now i saw ota tried to install and my phone resets and stays at the screen with a droid character and exclamation mark. anyone know what i need to do?

did you make a backup? if so flash it.

Yeah hopefully you made a back up! Pull your battery out > replace battery > Hold Volume Down while pressing the Power button > That should boot you into hboot > select recovery > select back up & restore > restore your backup.

Might be a good idea to pull your sdcard out before you try to boot it and make sure there is no PG05IMG.zip on your sdcard.

For future reference go into etc/security on the your phone with root explorer in r/w (read/write). Find the file name otacerts.zip and rename it otacerts.bak. Then mount as r/o (read only) in root explorer and exit. This should block OTA's.

i have a question will i have any problems if i root my phone using a laptop i just want to make sure before i do it

The software number is the important factor, not the android version.
I've read that if you have the latest 605.9 update that you have to downgrade in order to use revo.
If your still on 605.5 or earlier it will work.

So if I understand what I'm reading correctly, if I have never rooted my phone and my phone just took the OTA update, there is no way to root at the moment without wiping data? I have to wait until there is a modified Revolutionary program before I can root, correct?

Thanks for any help anyone might offer! I'm brand new to this and it's a bit overwhelming to try and get a handle on everything.

That's the feeling I'm getting. Could be some time, too

Currently you are correct. You have to downgrade before you can root which will wipe everything.
