[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

Who knew. It took me a half hour to figure out that what looked like a 1 was a lower case L

Quick question as I have not seen it addressed in this thread yet. Does firmware version, build number, etc...matter when using the Revolutionary root method?

Other root methods said they require 605.3 or higher.

Here's my info on my TBolt:

Android Version: 2.2.1
Basband: 1.39.00.0627r, 0.01.69.0625r
Kernal: 2.6.32.21
Build #: 1.70.605.0
SW#: Same ^

Any input would be greatly appreciated. The rooting process looks super simple (even easier than my old Moto Droid 1). I'm fairly capable but I just want to make sure I won't brick my phone.

Thanks.

What happen to droidxcon auto root thread:mad:?????????????????????????
I don't want to use rovolutionary because it uses a different bootloader.

I'm guessing you figured it out by now, watch the video.

This may be a stupid question , but I want to be sure. If I load a custom Rom, now that I have revolution installed, I can restore back to the stock Gingerbread I am running now, as long as I have a nandroid backup?

Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else, but I've uninstalled HTC Sync and Doubletwist because I heard they can interfere with this, but I still get stuck on "Waiting for fastboot" My phone goes to the bootloader screen, but just sits there.

Any suggestions?

:DThank you for the instructions! I just finished rooting with Revolutionary a few moments ago. Thanks to the Youtube video, it was fast, easy and painless.:D

Right now I am using Titanium to backup all my user apps and system data. Oh joy, joy, joy!! :)

I don't have internet access on my PC but I downloaded all the files through my TB and transferred to the PC. The phone is now S-off but I can't download the Clockwork Recovery via Revolutionary. Is there a way to manually install this and where can I find the download? Or is it possible to continue with the root process and install CWR later via Rom Manager?

Yes.... or you can use the MR3 Gingerbread RUU which will return the phone back to stock. If you need a link to it let me know.

First of all i gotta give the OP mad, MAD props for this tutorial and the video... it really does make rooting an awesomely simple process... i Just rooted my Thunderbolt and flashed BAMF forever as well as the latest GB radios... however...

im having issues with Superuser often force closing whenever something tries to use root access... thing is, sometimes root checker says i have root access and sometimes it says i dont... i uninstalled SU from apps manager and re-dowloaded it, thought that worked but today more force closes. should i boot into recovery and flash the original SU file provided in the OP again? is it a problem with the latest radios that i flashed? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

@doughboy

It wouldn't be the radios.. you mentioned in the ROM guide that you only formatted the system and not data and cache as mentioned in another guide by team bamf. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it since I've never tried it that way. I can only go by experience and the way I flash ROMs is the same way thats in my guide.. wiping the data, cache partition and dalvik. I'd assume formatting the system wipes everything all at once. I'd recommended wiping each one individually as written in my guide.

Besides that though.... I had some problems with Bamf Forever 1.0.7 when I first installed it. Titanium Backup and ROM Manager were giving me some root permission errors as well. The way I cleared it up was with a few reboots of the phone and uninstalling and reinstalling the apps from scratch. I previously had them restored using MyBackup. I also installed BusyBox from the market which usually helps and updating the SuperUser app from the market as well. Not sure which one eventually fixed it but the combo seemed to have cleared everything up for me.

All the files you need are in the first post. I don't think you can go back and use ROM Manager to install CWM. I never tried this root method (used DroidXcons Auto Root) but if I remember correctly... Revolutionary installs its own version of CWM Recovery.
