[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

disregard, I finally figured it out.. It was a mis-typed number for s/n on the beta key generator, LOL.. Thank You!!!!! What ROM should I install next? Plz excuse me, this is a first time for me.

Excellent! I used the Revolutionary method and have rooted my Thunderbolt. I followed the straight forward instructions and it worked without a problem. I did this about a week ago but now my question is about OTA. Android Central, here of course, reports that the over the air updates are now starting to go out for all HTC phones so my question is, having gained root access by using the Revolutionary method will I still be able to get this update? If so, will the updated cause any problems with my phone because I have rooted it?

Thanks all!

T

My update came down, and it came down automatically, now my phone keeps looping. It tries to update, I get the yellow triangle, then it freezes. Battery pull, and my phone reboots.
I did a factory reset, and it is working, but any idea on how to upgrade it or how to keep it from updating or was this just a bad OTA?

Thanks

Hello

so i tried that method you posted about fixing the security warning on my thunderbolt. the first one said the main version is higher. so i tried the second one and it resulted saying the main version in older! im so scared and confuse right now please help. my current situation is that am in the process in unrooting my phone so i can receive the GB OTA update. i got the to step where i hold to flash the original firmware to my thunderbolt. but that ended up with me getting a boot loop with a security warning! please help i would really appreciate

thank you!

I can't answer questions through pms so post them it the threads but very quick... I'm not sure what security warning you are referring to.

As for the unroot process... if you used revolutionary, you need to follow the unroot guide starting with pushing the adb commands. The security warning that you are seeing is most likely due to the fact that you didn't flash the first zip and went directly to flashing the second zip. Yes it will say its an older version... its suppose to. The first pg05img zip puts an older build on the phone.... MR2. The second pg05img zip unroots the phone. If you skip the first part then yes you will receive a security warning and pretty much brick the phone. Its very important to follow every step of the guide. If your phone is bricked now... you need to flash any one of the leaked RUUs in bootloader. Use the 2.11.605.5 RUU to get the phone working again.

2.11.695.5 RUU - AndroidPolice_PG05IMG_Mecha_2.11.605.5 - Minus.com
-After downloading it, rename it to "PG05IMG"
-Drop the file on the root of the SD Card
-Turn off your device Hold Volume Down + Power to reboot into the bootloader --the file should automatically be detected and the flashing process will begin.
-Wait for your device to complete the process and reboot

Sorry, a few more questions.
I did a factory reset, how do I keep my TB from auto updating again, as I am not near a computer due to being away for a family emergency...long story.
Once I get home and run my latest recovery, not stored on my phone, if I use the new non VZW ROM, will this keep all my apps in place or will it delete all?

Thanks

You can install the leaked Gingerbread RUU yourself. 2.11.605.5 what I linked above or you can install a custom ROM. Either option will wipe the data from the phone. Use Mybackup Pro and backup your stuff.

Ok thanks. I remember last night listening to music to get my mind off of things (deaths in my family) when I look over and see the OTA coming down.
I am like....oh, just great.

In order to unroot to accept verizons official GB update, my understanding is that I can unroot by just flashing the two zips on the second step of the unroot process. Is this correct? I never installed a custom rom, I'm still on official 2.2. I flashed the first zip, which my understanding is the same rom as I was on before. When I flash the second zip, I accept it in the screen, but it says "bypassed". Did i do something wrong? Phone is still fully functional as a rooted phone on stock 2.2.

I just read a few posts back. So from that i am getting that i cant unroot wih the zips and in fact the zip i flashed did nothing. So my best bet to get GB is to flash the gb leak from a few posts up?

I can't get the download for Revolutionary to work. It will get to about 75% and then i get an error. something about the source file can not be read
Any help would be great

Ok so i updTed through the gb leak. It seems as if i lost root in doing so. I still have s-off on the boot loader. Whete should i start in the process to get root back?

OK all, once again this proves this is one of the best sites around.
I had forgotten that I had a 2 week old backup of my apps in my bag on sd card. I put the card in my phone, and ran a TitaniumBackup Pro restore.
Worked like a charm, updated all my apps on the Market, I froze the file that pushes the update.
When I get home, I will run the ROM you posted in this thread.

Thanks.

Ok, i tried to do the 605.5 RUU (over Rev's root) and it did nothing, my TBolt went to recovery and I ended up with a fresh 605.3. What did I do wrong? Does the OTA work on Rev's root or not? I have my Titanium BU and MyBU and even a Nandroid.

[NOTE]Do not ever put an OTA on a rooted device. You can possibly end up with a bricked or non working device. If you want to install an OTA update then you have to unroot the device first.

For flashing RUUs on a rooted device: Unless the RUU says that it is compatible for rooted phones... you will most likely LOSE ROOT... So dont do it unless you are prepared to root the phone again. [/NOTE]

Crap. So Im lucky to still have a working device. Does that mean im screwed, i updated to gb using the link provided. Will I be able to root again?

Okay, bere with me as this is all new .... From what I've been reading so far today. If you flash the RUU over a rooted phone you will most likely lose root. You will need to re-root after flashing it.

Are you sure you flashed the right version?
Here's the 2.11.605.5 GB RUU: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Its also been confirmed that Revolutionary works with the new 2.11.605.5 so root away.

I

I used this link you provided someone else. I did not lose s-off, and it appears that su can not find su binary. I re dled su from the market, and I tried to update su and that is what it told me. I think its superuser not able to grant access because of the lost su binary?? Possible?
