[GUIDE] How to Root Your Nook Color

I rooted my NC with autonooter. It's working fine. I did the same for my boss' NC and is't also working fine but she told me that she wasn't able to read books in-store at B&N. I went last night to B&N and I wasn't able to read books in-store either.

Does anyone know if this is because of rooting and if so, is there a way around it?

Okay I read through the entire thread but one question remains unanswered for me.

I see no mention of this important detail; When I launch the market etc.. Do I need to use a new Gmail act or do I just use the same one I use on my Evo? If it is the same one will that cause issues? I used a different one just in case and it is working for free stuff but I have not tried anything that is paid. I want to wait for your input to see if I need to change to my regular act. first. I have not signed into YouTube or anything yet...

Question 2 is when the NC honeycomb update comes out in the Spring, do we need to do anything? If so what?

FYI: I also never did the 8x interrupt procedure portion of the root and it seems to be working fine. I did not do much to it out of the box, maybe thats why?

BTW HUGE thanks to all you guys that are helping us do this. The NC really is a cool device once rooted. They should just release it with a normal Android OS on it.

I just used the same gmail account I have had for several years, so I doubt it matters.

Good question, but it may be too early to tell (I think the update will be to Froyo, not Gingerbread or Honeycomb). I figured I'd cross that bridge when I came to it. Possibly it will be necessary to reset it to stock and go from there.

I didn't either, but had already upgraded to 1.1.0.

Right, lots of good help here :)

Darn.. Maybe I should change accounts to be the same as my Evo then?
Logic tells me that there would be some confusion having two devices with the same account but I guess that is not an issue.

I guess that would allow me to use all of my paid apps.
Will the paid apps work on both devices at the same time or do I have to purchase one for each?

I guess I have to Erase & Deregister it?

Heeeeeelp!

This is my fourth time trying to root my NC. It's running 1.1 because it auto-updated a while ago. I'm using a Mac and following those instructions. The problem I'm having is that the link for auto-nooter as it stands now in the OP downloads "auto-nooter-3.0.0.img (after I unzip it)" so when I typed in "dd if-auto-nooter-3.0.0.img of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m" the terminal said no such file existed.

In reading the thread I saw that someone else with a Mac just dragged the file over to the terminal and it found the location itself. When I did that, all heck broke loose! The computer started beeping and like a million question marks and other symbols filled the terminal. I let it finish doing that thinking maybe that's what it was supposed to do, and then took the card out. When I put it in the NC and plugged the NC into the computer nothing new happened; it hooked up to my computer same as it always has.

What did I do wrong?

Did anything get copied to the SD at all?

Gah, I'm feeling like such a fail whale right now! :-\

ETA: I followed a YouTube video and got it to work. In case anyone else has this same problem, what I did was change the name of the .img file to "root.img" and then typed the following: "dd if=Users/MyUsername/Desktop/root.img of=/dev/disk#" substituting my own info for "MyUsername" and "disk#" worked like a charm after that!

Noooooow my problem is, I can SEE the market, but I can't download from the market. I can see things, I can push the button to download, but when I select the item to download it gets stuck in "Starting download" and the status bar never advances. What gives?! :(

ETA (AGAIN! LOL): It's working now! What I did was follow some crazy sounding advice from someone else and open the GoogleTalk app and closed it. After that I went back into the market and was able to download with no problem. Crazy, but it worked!

Burning image to SD card

When I run win32 I receive the error 8: An error occurred when attempting to get the device's geometry.

I'm running win7 64 bit, and using a Sony multi card reader. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I had nothing but trouble with win32. You might want to try WinImage
What is WinImage

When I try WinImage I get the error message-
"The current image format is not supported by the disk drive J: Do you want to resize it?' I click on yes, and there are files on the SD drive. However, when I continue with the installation, the nc just boots like normal.

Are you sure that you're using a reader that supports SDHC and not just SD ?
Many of the older readers won't work on SDHC cards even though they fit in the slot.

Install the update

Register the newly-restored NC (connect to wifi, register with B&N)

Reboot

Plug in the USB cord

Is it essential to register with B&N? I would rather not be bothered if it's not needed. I have a Kindle and plan on using the Kindle app on my NC. :-)

For now, I want to root with the Auto-Nooter 3.0 method, run rooted stock until Honeycomb is available.

Thanks for your responses. I plan on trying this out tonight.

Does this effect the Nook Color ability to still be an ebook reader? What happens to books you may have already downloaded from B&N?

Thanks

ok new user and i am having issues rooting the NC. i started by attempting to reset the nook as discribed in the instructions.

-The easiest way to reset your Nook to factory defaults is to power off the nook, and then interrupt the boot process by holding down the power button*EIGHT TIMES*(interrupt the device from booting up 8x)

now when i attempt to set up the account on the NC i can not connect to the network. i am using my home wireless and i verified the password. i keeps failing.

any sugestions? or what did i do wrong?

I did this and followed every step to the last. This is my first experience with an android device, I have used all apple products; iPad, iPhone, iPod, mainly because I was familiar with how jailbreaking works and what I can and can't do.
I am a little confused, in the market place there are some apps we have to pay for even after rooting?

So maybe someone can enlighten me here. I ran through this process, but when booting up, it just repeats the boot animation over and over. I think I may have messed something up during the original rooting process, but I'm not positive about that, since the boot animation is at least showing up.

Rooting has nothing to do with whether apps are free or have a charge. It is necessary to gain access to the market on a stock Nook, but actually refers to being the root or superuser with full administrative privileges.
