[GUIDE] How to Root Your Nook Color

^All better now. But it seems the ROM is buggy. I can't get some of the books downloaded from BN to show up???

Also, can I run a custom launcher (LAuncher Pro, etc.) with the stock ROM?

You can run a different launcher with the stock ROM (rooted of course). I actually still use the Nook launcher, but have ADW.launcher installed (for when I install apps, want to access them, without rebooting).

Noob here. I was planning on picking up a NC today. With this new firmware 1.1.0, can the NC still be rooted with this method or should I wait?

It can't be rooted yet, but with that said, I doubt the one you'd get out of the box today would already be on the new update. Take the steps in the disable OTA thread, and there's a good chance you'll be fine.

...and of course you can always use Nookie on SD anytime, and if you install Nookie internally before the OTA, you'll never have to worry about updates.

Even if your device has 1.1.0; you could always rollback to 1.0 and then go to 1.0.1 to get rooted while you wait for the root process to be developed for 1.1.0

I just tried to root my color nook. Began by rebooting 8X. When it downloaded the software and I went into the main page it was still showing my home page but I blinking error message (with a paragraph a script) was showing. I can't read it because it blinks too fast in and out.
I tried to deregister and it just hangs. I tried to reboot 8X and re download and the same thing happens.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hmmm, can you get into the settings menu to erase data?

I can get to the settings but when I try to deregister the device it just says "deregistering device" but nothing happens. Just hangs.

Yeah, probably best not to do the 8x thing without wiping data first. I'd say go ahead and root, and if you continue to get weird error messages after that, follow the steps in the stickied restore to stock thread.

If I think of an easier way, I'll let you know . . .

yeah- didn't prompt me to resetup the device. Don't I need to do that before rooting. All my settings and books are still on the device. Except for that weird blinking message everything else appears as it was.
Thanks,
Frank

They say that, but I've done it being unregistered and it was fine. Just register via nookcolortools after rooting (in NCT's, it's the second one called Wireless under Settings).

Is this true? How so? 8x interrupt process?

Yeah, I know with 1.0.1 you can roll back to 1.0.0 by 8x reboot / wipe; I'm guessing that you can do it w/ 1.1 too.

Also, I *think* you can use a method of booting Clockwork recovery off SDcard, and then writing the 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 files to the NC ... that method works for recovering from other disasters, so I would expect would work for getting rid of 1.1 too ...

I should also mention that I have heard that the rooting process of Nooter .2 MAY work w/o needing any changes. the Autonooter, though, is not expected to work. I haven't seen any reports of nooter .2 actually working w/ 1.1; just that it *should*.

Help!!! My root went great.. My friend went out and got a nook, I told him I would help him root it.
I followed the same instructions as mine... but it won't let him sign into google with his gmail account????

Argggh didn't see this before I rooted is there a way to go back to the old version of the software? My NC seems partially rooted? Very weird stuff happening. Please help! :-\

If you can give us more detail, I think we'll be able to help you better. What firmware are you on? ...and what do you mean by "partially rooted?"

Another important step:

In order to also allow the installation of apps that don't come from the Market (highly recommended), you can do the following:

Hit the Main NC Menu button (the up arrow in the middle at the bottom), and then Extras. Find the app called NookcolorTools (if it isn't there, reboot your NC, and it should be there now).

In NookColorTools, check the "Allow non-market apps" box.

Reboot your NookColor.

. . .

I'm having trouble installing non market apps. I have already checked the box in NookColorTools and I'm still getting the error message saying apk files are supported. I just did the update of 1.1.0 rooted

Error 8

I picked up my NC color today and have had a issue getting the img to write on the microSD card. It either gave me an Error 8 message or seemed to work very slowly. Nothing ever was on the card.

I had been downloading the files with Chrome. I was able to make it work perfectly after downloading with IE. Give it a try if you are having this issue.
