been on the Google boot screen for about 10 minutes now, tried unplugging the USB and holding the power button down

try holding down the power button for about 5 sec and let it go ...

Ok I've got a noob question. I see that this walkthrough has the unlock + root all in one session. Could I follow the root steps, if I unlocked the phone using a similar but slightly different method on Thursday? I think I used the one from droidworld or something with the android sdk tools version. Thanks.

hopefully someone can help, I installed the usb driver downloaded from this thread and used it to get rid of the yellow mark in device manager but when i reboot into the bootloader and type the command all i get is waiting for device and nothing happens. I went through the steps and believe i have followed them correctly. any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't get Vol up + Vol down + Power to do anything! No matter what I try, the device just turns on - I never get to that Bootloader screen with Andy on his back...!

You have to hold the tip of volume up and tip of volume down button an hold the power button in all at the same time

Oh, I'm such a dummy! I hadn't powered my device off first! I had only hit the power button! Duh!

Looks like there was a glitch when you click on the link. If you look at the link in your browser window, there's some additional text at the start and end of the link. Once you delete the extra stuff, the link works. Here's what I used to download the Samsung driver:

Edit: Driver installed fine and successfully unlocked bootloader and rooted phone. Now setting things back up. Thanks again to Cyber Warrior. His guide to ROM backups and flashing in the Thunderbolt forums got me started when I was new to Android, and glad to see that he's helping out folks in the Galaxy Nexus community,

Yeah, I ended up just going to the Samsung and getting it from there.

Thanks to the OP! I decided that even if I'm going to run stock for a while, I may as well unlock and root before my phone gets to be too much of a pain to back up later on.

Ahh crap... sorry guys, fixing link right now from my PC. I was on a Mac when I changed it and did'nt have a chance to test it yet.

I got it to work after several tries and using the thread to troubleshoot. You really need to follow each step exactly as he says. First time unlocking and rooting - excited to realize this phone's potential. Thanks for these excellent instructions! My suggestion is tell people to install the drivers first before moving to the superboot.

i unlocked the bootloader.. if I root can i still get the updates? I dont plan on putting a rom on till one of the devs puts a solid one out.. but i still want to root for tethering and apps? so will i still get updates if i just root?

Ive got a question. When i boot into fastboot (i assume you need to be in fastboot to do the ADB stuff, correct?) and plug in my usb cable, it installs the usb drivers, but whenever i try to type commands in command prompt it says "error: device offline" so i cant really do anyghing from command prompt. Any ideas? Thanks guys

My first time rooting and it worked! Thanks to Cyber Warrior for these excellent instructions. The only issue I had was with the USB drivers but I followed the instructions and it was fine.

These Samsung USB drivers seem to be failing. I've installed them twice and yet the USB driver selection you showed in the troubleshooting screenshot is nowhere to be found in the device manager. I haven't gone so far as attempting to instructions anyway since I noticed that my device manager didn't recognize my phone as soon as I booted into fastboot mode.

An update for my issue. I was unable to get those Samsung drivers working after trying many different routes. I then found that my phone was stuck in fastboot mode with no response. So I did a battery pull and the phone was able to boot up as normal.

After this, I installed the Windows software pdanet since it automates some driver installation. It was unable to fully install either because it wasn't able to get the drivers fully installed. But then I noticed that my device manager was semi-recognizing my phone now. So I attempted to steps in the tutorial again. This time, they all worked without a single problem. My phone is successfully rooted and all of my data is re-downloading as I type this.

Just a commentary on this guide...I found this guide to be the most thorough and informative rooting guide I've ever seen. Very well done.

OK so I got into the screen where it says start at the top in green and you can change it with the volume buttons.

From there I'm suppose to type "fastboot oem unlock" which I do and it says waiting for device but my phone is still sitting on the same screen. The instructions I read say its suppose to go to a screen where it says yes or no for unlocking the bootloader but it doesn't.
