[GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Besides having a superuser app like dmmarck mentioned or downloading an app that requires root/superuser permissions....

You can download the android terminal emulator... open the app and if the command line starts with a "$" then you're rooted. If it starts with a "#" then you're not rooted.
Simple enough...it appears that I did root it back in December when I got it. Certainly explains why the 4.0.4 update doesn't complete. Thanks for the quick and simple answers.
Now to read up on how to unroot it. I dont suspect there is an app for that. :)

If you want to use Wugs Toolkit... probably the most easiest way. It unroots the phone and puts back the stock recovery so you can accept the OTA.. then just reroot the phone again with the same toolkit.

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

where do I find the latest driver?

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

Ok, just had to restore back to stock to see if it fixed a DRM issue in Hulu+ but I wanted to keep root. Problem is, I have no busybox, can't install it using Superuser (can't gain root). Is it due to the 4.0.4 update?

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

just used this method unlock worked perfectly, I cant seem to gain root though. 4.0.4

You need to flash CWM recovery (or install it) and then flash the new 4.0.4 superuser.

OR, download Wug's Toolkit and go from there :).

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

OK, here's my issue. I rooted on 4.0.4, have the Super User app but keep getting an "Error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands" in ClockworkMod. I assume SU permissions aren't being granted properly.. I see there's a 4.0.4 zip for updated SU permissions and to flash it from recovery, but how can I do that if I dont have clockwork mod flashed?

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

So I get to, install-superboot-windows.bat and double click it to root but it doesnt reboot it just stays at the unlocked screen. Says fastboot status - okay at the bottom...what do i do now?

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

What is the average length of time it should take for the phone to reboot after being rooted?

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I have unlocked the bootloader but, so far I've been unable to root the phone. Not sure what I'm missing.

Greetings, earthlings:

I will be updating both portions of this guide, but mostly the Mac portion in the coming week or so.

That is all :).

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

I had to replace my Galaxy Nexus due to a cracked screen, so I took the opportunity to follow the steps in the first posts to unlock and root the phone.

The unlock part was easy enough, but I had a minor issue with my Win7 Pro laptop loading the device driver and had to do disconnect from the laptop, reboot the phone and do it again. Worked the second time.

The root part also was straightforward after I re-read the instructions six time! :p Since everything else was PC based through a command prompt, I was thrown off by the first step to copy SU.ZIP to the phone! I kept looking on my laptop to figure out where I was supposed to save it - DUH!!!!

After I got it rooted, I still wasn't sure it was rooted, because I kept looking under Security > Device Administrators, thinking something would be listed, but of course I should have looked for the Superuser app in the app drawer. Maybe this would be helpful to have in the instructions so the process can be verified.

Thanks for the instructions - now I'm rooted and I'm off to see what damage I can do. :)

Re: [GUIDE] How To Unlock Bootloader and Root Verizon Galaxy Nexu

I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, ICS 4.0.4. I followed Dmmarck's instructions just fine, until I got to the Rooting the 4.0.4 update.
Then I hit a wall. I found out that I needed the Android SDK (Installing the SDK | Android Developers).
I installed it on my Windows 7 PC, and ran the program, called Android SDK Manager. I made sure that The Android SDK Tools
and the Android SDK Platform-tools were installed, and under Extras, the Google USB Driver was installed. I used an app on my phone,
called WiFi File Explorer Pro to move the su.zip file from my PC to my phone. The WiFi File Explorer Pro app refers to the SD card location
on the phone as "Internal Storage." The actual location on the phone for "Internal Storage" is: /mnt/sdcard/

Then Dmmarck's instructions worked just fine. I have rooted my phone just fine, per the Root Check Pro app. Thank you Dmmarck!
