[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

I downloaded the hboot_2.xx_soff-V9.zip, after extracting I am missing the RomManager.apk file. I tried to download the hboot_2.xx_soff-V9.zip from multiple sites and all are missing the RomManager.apk files. Do I need that file in order to root? Thanks.

You don't need the file in order to root. I saw it came up in the thread but the guide doesn't have anything about Rom Manager in the process, after you're rooted you can install it form the market.

Another Q, not that I'll ever need to do it since I can use recovery... but if I did a factory reset on my phone does it mess up the rooting? When I'm done resetting does it reboot back into Sprint Lovers ROM?

When you do a factory reset it just erases all user data, so it would be like the fresh install of the ROM, everything in the /system directory still remains, but userdata and cache get erased.

So if you go to any rom and then factory reset it, it'll just erase the user data that's been installed to that rom.

nice. that just about covers evyerhthing i need to know....for now

thanks again!

edit: hmm. that was interesting. i did a factory reset...it took me right to the recovery menu...i pressed reboot, and it changed the HTC splashscreen to an Android logo splashscreen. the look of the homescreen is the same. then i go to sd storage and find out my internal memory starts out at 408 mb instead of 357mb when i first booted up Sprint Lover's! then i go to the app drawer and notice some apps got deleted from 57 apps down to 40. all the Sprint apps were gone except Sprint Hotspot and some others. and the Wifi Hotspot App is gone. Superuser app is still there.

anyway i thought that was interesting, then i went back into recovery and did a NAND restore, and now i'm back to where i was.

A lot of custom roms will install the "bloat" apps from Sprint as user apps so you can easily remove them.

can i erase them like i would any other app or would i need to get a program like Root Explorer to fully uninstall them?

Did you hard reset your phone in the first step?
Yep, just tried the hard reset and i still onyl get the freindly blue screen after tying su. Sorry if this is a newb issue. What I see in the command line is the same as shown in your guide up to this point:

c:\stuff> adb shell
$ su
Permission denied

Are you hitting temporary root on z4root when it pops up?

Don't worry about the issue, we'll figure it out.

That is correct, I get to the z4mod, hit temporary, and the message shown on the guide appears (ie. Temp. Root applied!...).

I have been using my phone for a while now before attempting to root (Sprint's 3rd party sh-t finally got to me) and I had a lot of data (Photos, music, ring tones i made, ect.) That I wanted to keep. I saved them to my desktop PC. I should be able to just put them back on my phone once rooted, correct?

hboot_2.xx_soff-V9.zip slow download then not matching MD5

I've downloaded hboot_2.xx_soff-V9.zip multiple times. Each time the file size is slightly different. And also each time it fails the MD5 check. Each download has taken in the neighborhood of 1 hour.

As you can imagine, I am getting frustrated with this download. I use this link.
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
I even tried feeding the download company some money for Preferred service. But still it takes a long time. And so far the result is not right.

Does anyone have any suggestions to make the download faster? Or most importantly, able to produce a file that passes the MD5 using:
fdaf065486925815332fa671a2a97a8f

Thanks for your help

Nevermind... I finally got a good download. I guess I was just unlucky at first.

Is there anyone who can get Titanium Backup to work with z4root to back everything up before rooting? I would prefer not to factory reset and lose all of my application settings.

Alternatively is there a lot of success rooting without doing a factory reset first? I see at least one post saying that they skipped it.

Fred..Thank you!! If it weren't for your version of this guide I would have never rooted. I read the original several times, but it seemed to mash together and I am also the type that learns by seeing it done, so the pics helped so much. The process went smooth and took hardly any time at all.

I have a question though, I have looked around and even used Google to search, I wanted to know if there are any themes compatible with the Sprint Lovers Rom?

Yes you should, the sdcard isn't erased during this process but it's always a good idea to make an sdcard backup folder on your PC once in a while.

Are you able to get the #?

The only thing that would stop z4root from running would be another app, you *should* be able to temp root with it and then use titanium backup, you just may need to install busy box through titanium (hit the menu key and go to help or problems, something like that).

I'm not sure about the success of not factory reseting your phone, this root method will erase what's on your phone either way so you might as well take as many of the problem causing variables away as you can.

Hi All,
I am planning on rooting using this guide tonight when I get off work. I have 2 questions.

1) how long does the process take from beginning to end?
2) Once rooted, where can I find another guide for flashing ROMs?

Thanks, and I may have more questions later.
