[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

The only thing that would stop z4root from running would be another app, you *should* be able to temp root with it and then use titanium backup, you just may need to install busy box through titanium (hit the menu key and go to help or problems, something like that).

I'm not sure about the success of not factory reseting your phone, this root method will erase what's on your phone either way so you might as well take as many of the problem causing variables away as you can.
Yeah I still can't get it to work. Sigh. I have MyBackupPro as well but it doesn't really save application data, unfortunately.

Can I stop after step 8 or so, reboot and use Titanium Backup, and then go back to flash a new rom?

Market Problems

I am having some problems with the market. I cannot install the updates for Angry Birds or Angry Birds Seasons. Additionally, whenever I try to install Fring I receive an installation error message saying that the package file is invalid.

I have cleared the Market's data and cache and rebooted, and still have the problems.

I have been able to install and updates other apps from the market on my Evo, as well as install apps from the market web site, so I don't think it is a general market problem.

Any thoughts?

So i made it thru this.....but i am stuck on step 21. :(
(21. Select Bootloader from the menu with the power button, it will scan the renamed PC36IMG.zip file on the sdcard (Sprint Lover’s ROM), select Yes and apply the update, then select Yes to reboot when it’s done.)
When i select "bootloader" from the menu it goes to an option of "HBOOT" and thats it. I dont have an option for yes as the instructions say? What am i doing wrong? can anyone help me get this finished up please?

EDIT....also i noticed that after i select bootloader is goes through a series of lines and one of them says something like "no image found". Am i screwed??

Any idea guys??? i could REALLY use some help please. i have a paperweight sitting on my desk right now. :(

"Factory Reset your phone" is part of the rooting process? No thanks. If it were as simple as typing a command in to the "root account" to become superuser, sure but I'm not interested in a factory reset of my phone in any way shape or form, so thanks, but I will not be rooting my device.

FIGURED IT OUT!!! i had to remove the ".zip" extension at the end of the files after i changed the names. :)

I thought it was hard to turn the EVO into a paperweight via Rooting. Jeez. No thanks...

I'm all ears for a new guide.

Your guide worked perfectly man. User error. :(
Thanks for the guide!

I'm glad it worked out! I should add a step to verify the files are the right names, if I get some more time I will list them all out and take a pic of how they should look.

Has there ever been a problem with PRL and profile updating after this has been done? My EVO keeps telling me there are updates after i do the install and power down and take the battery out any suggestions?

Hi All,
I am planning on rooting using this guide tonight when I get off work. I have 2 questions.

1) how long does the process take from beginning to end?
2) Once rooted, where can I find another guide for flashing ROMs?

Thanks, and I may have more questions later.

Hey, sorry I missed this but thanks for pointing it out.

I would give yourself a solid 60 - 75 minutes (that one file is HUGE and it depends on your internet speed, as well copying the files themselves takes a good chunk of time, so does updating the phone), that being said you probably don't want to rush the directions. All in all, actually doing stuff you won't be spending that much time on, it's really waiting a lot on the phone.

Take it step by step, you want to make sure you don't have to run out to do something right away after or that you'll be disturbed, it's not like the world will end if you had to start over but that can be frustrating the first time around.

Edit, totally missed your second question!

Re: Roms, after you're setup you can get ROM Manager from the market, it can download some roms for you, or you can have it install roms that you download and then copy over to the SD card. It'll prompt you to install clockworkmod recovery and this is OK, just make sure you pick version 2.6.0.1 (you may have to do this after it installs 3.0.0.5, it's OK if it needs a few attempts at writing it within rom manager).

Hey metdaddy, what updates is the phone telling you is available?

Sprint Lovers is a sprint/htc based sense rom with full capabilities to update your PRL and data profile through menu > settings.

Thank you so much for the great guide. It honestly could not have gone smoother.

I have ROM Manager installed and want to install Myns. I made a backup of Sprint Lovers according to your guide, do I need to back anything else up before flashing Myns? Finally, I am sure it is easy, but can you recommend a guide on how to actually flash a Rom with Rom manager ?

Nope, you have a solid back-up. Put that back-up in a safe place, i have a few on my PC, and youre all set to rock and roll.

The link in my signature can help you with rom manager, but its pretty straight forward. Also some rom manager stuff HERE

I seem to have run into a snag:

I followed the directions, got the phone rooted and the sprint lovers rom on there. But when I installed rom manager, I was unable to flash clockwork recovery, I get an error message: "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!" so I can't back anything up. I downloaded titanium backup and it installed another busybox, but I still can't back up on rom manager or titanium backup. Sounds like my busybox install didn't work or something. Should I run through all the rooting instructions again? And if so, do I need to revert back to the stock rom and unroot?

Here is the phone's current info:

Firmware 2.1-update1
Baseband: 1.36.00.04.02
Kernel: 2.6.29-ac94cf60 HTC-kernel@and18-2#1
Build: 1.17.651.1 CL160858test-keys
software 1.17.651.1
PRI: 1.34_003
PRL: 60675

I hope I haven't screwed anything up permanently...

Nope, this happens sometimes with ROM Manager, have you tried it a few times and rebooted and tried it?

If you need to install clockworkmod recovery manually, you can get this file: PC36IMG.zip and place it on the root of your sdcard.

Then power off your phone, then power it on by pressing volume down and the power button at the same time, hit volume up to apply the update, hit no to reboot the phone and select recovery from the menu. Now you'll be in clockworkmod recovery 2.6.0.1, reboot your phone from recovery go back in to rom manager and see if it's listed. If it asks you to update to 3.0.0.5 I'd hold off for a bit.
