[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

I did this and it worked very well for me especially for a first time user and how scared I was to root due to all the horror stories you hear out there. But overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the end result.

But, I did want to ask...

Does this process in any way make the sprint TV application to stop working? I noticed everything is working great including the Market area, however, the sprint TV application has a issue. I can view the entire list of showings, but when I attempt to actually view a movie or program, the sprint TV application will ack like its loading and then I get prompted with a message about not being connected to the internet. The phone however, reads 3G and has four bars of signal strength.

Any ideas on how to get it working or is this something I lost due to rooting?

Thanks!!

please disregard my previous post on the issue with sprint TV not working. I'm really pleased with my phone now rooted. I'm just hoping I'm not going to get nailed later with additional data charges for using the wi-fi feature. :-)

Thanks for all who made this happen!

Gabriel

P.S. THANK GOD NO MORE NOVA!!! :)

this is so hard. I'm stuck at the part where you have to check if the codes match. How do i do that?

You have to get an md5 checker from Google. I just googled the one I used in the original post, I think the name of it is on the screen shot.

If you go through the commands and feel like it's too much of a process, checkout Unrevoked3 for the Evo: unrevoked

If you want to go through this and learn though, take your time, make sure to read and follow the directions step by step, you'll be fine!

I did read the directions and downloaded all of the applications listed in the original post. I downloaded MD5 checker, but I don't know how to check if it matches the code of Hboot2.02, because there are many files within that folder. Truthfully, all I really want to do with my rooted evo is to have the ability to use overclock, that is it. I don't want to change anything else.

You have to check the md5 sum of the zip file you downloaded before you extracted it.

Is it possible to use a Linux box (ubuntu 10.04 64 bit) instead of a MS Windows box to do the rooting process? My girlfriend has commandeered my Windows lappy that I rarely use and will probably be less than enthralled to give it up for the time needed to do this (I don't wanna get between her & Netflix). I looked through previous posts and didn't find anything, if I missed a thread about this then a link to it will be cool & I'll go from there. Thx

adb push recovery /
adb shell busybox --install /sbin
adb shell nohup /sbin/recovery &

This step is failing "error: device offline"

it tells me the zip file is corrupt every time I redo this process.

I did this on my phone 2 days ago and it worked perfectly my wifes phone will not work no matter what I do. Been 6 hours of bs

Who has the files that work currently and which links are not tied to some bs downloader spam spyware

Excellent Walk-through

I was a little skeptical about rooting my Evo. I came from a moment which was easier than hell to root. You made it far easier to root an Evo. Awesome walk-through. Easiest one on the net, yet.

What is the argument against using unrevoked3? I find it to be the easiest method.

It's a trust issue, some people don't like it because it's closed source - it's closed source so the OEMs & carriers don't close the flaw that allows it to work.

I've spoken to some of the people who wrote it and my opinion is they are very smart and good hearted. I actually just rooted a dinc with unrevoked and it was such an easy process.

I like rooting with this method on this thread though for beginners, if you want to really get your hands dirty and have more of an understanding of what you're doing. Sometimes after people use unrevoked and then have a rooting/flashing related problem they have no idea where to start. I feel rooting the "long" way is a good first step in getting a basic understanding of how this all works.

So I recommend both.

Would you recommend it to me if I have never rooted before? Ive been doing some research and I found that to be the easiest.

Ok so I downloaded the Hboot 2.02 from the provided links and checked them with MD5 Checker, but none of them match the following code:

27eb4a36ba01078193975fc93723dd60

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, unrevoked is the easiest and I would recommended it only if you have an understanding of what it does so if you get in to a rough spot you'll have a starting point.

Then you should re-download the file. Make sure you are checking the zip file itself, not one of the extracted files.

I am new to the evo too. I have rooted with unrevoked 3 and created a nandroid backup. I used the mac download which is basically a one click method. It seemed a little too simple to me, especially after seeing all the steps that are required with windows. I haven't downloaded any roms yet though. How do I know if I'm fully rooted? I downloaded the terminal emulator app, and when I type in su the result is #, which I'm told means it's rooted. Can I download roms directly from the rom manager app, without having to use a computer? This is way more complicated than the Pre. Sorry if any questions were repeats. I searched for days on end on this forum for answers to these questions. Thanks in advance.

Sure, you can use rom manager. Using Unrevoked & Rom Manager is a pretty neat and easy process to root and install custom roms.
