[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

Newbie Questions

I'm sure I should probably ask these questions somewhere else, but I was reading this thread and would really like to try out rooting my phone to install this particular ROM. So I wanted to ask a couple quick questions that hopefully someone can answer.

I have downloaded the "un-root" pcimg file to my SD card to unroot my phone and bring it back to factory settings (I downloaded it from XDA developers).

My main question is if I try this process to root my phone and install this ROM, if I ever want to just bring it totally back to factory settings is all I have to do is boot into the loader screen and run that un-root update? Will that always work?

And, if so, does that include my RSA keys or whatever they are called for my 4G radio? I read somewhere about backing those up, because if they are lost or destroyed you cannot get them back. Would that update to bring the phone back to factory settings fix those if I ran it?

Finally, I've read that there are multiple ways to root your phone, and most of the literature says to avoid using unrevoked, is this correct? One method I read about said to use the bridge from my cpu to the phone and type commands into a c: prompt. Is this the preferred method? Once I root using that method I could then install this ROM?

To install the ROM into a rooted phone do you just transfer the file for the ROM onto your SD card and run it?

Any links to these specific methods (that are preferred) would be greatly helpful. It is sometimes difficult to weed through all these different threads.

If those RSA keys were to get messed up and you couldn't restore them, and even the pcimg file that restores it to factory settings doesn't fix them...then couldn't you still bring it to the Sprint store and get it replaced? If you restore it to factory settings but the 4G isn't working wouldn't they just replace it?

Not to mention, if you have the insurance won't they replace it for anything?

I just want to clarify.

Thanks again.

Hey Z4T,

To un-root your phone after you follow this guide you'll have to do two things, run unrevoked s-on tool and run the file that you downloaded from XDA.

One of the steps of this guide is to backup your RSA 4G keys (it's done before anything gets erased, but typically is never touched when switching roms, etc - it's just a backup). No when you run the PC36IMG.zip file (or the RUU - rom update utility) it will not repair broken RSA keys, that's why this back is up important.

Take a look at this thread: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...-help-info-asking-help-updated-1-18-11-a.html

And it'll tell you what root options are available for your phone, as well as link you to a thread where people have voted if unrevoked has hurt their phone.

There's two different versions of the unrevoked software: unrevoked-forever, which changes the phones security from on to off, and unrevoked3, which is the unrevoked root process that people seem to love or hate.

Can I ask one more question too....? Hopefully so!

I am very interested in flashing to the Vaelpak 3.0 rom, and I have the zip file downloaded from the forum link here on androidforums. If I flas to that rom does that include all the "kernals" and stuff too? Or are they something different I need to worry about? If I just root my phone with something like unrevoked then will it still have the kernals, or will they change each time I flash it to another rom? If they do change, is that something that happens with the flash, or do I need to install those separately?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kernels come with every ROM, developers modify them for various reason like to increase battery life or increase speed or change the way some default settings are set.

When you get the rom file you get the kernel with it so you don't have to worry about flashing anything separately. (Until you want to :) ).

So what you'd do is root with unrevoked3.x (from the link), then install rom manager, install zip from sdcard, locate the rom you want, hit "backup rom" and "wipe date & cache", then the phone will reboot, backup you current setup, wipe the data and install your new rom.

You can just go back to the folder you used to root with command prompt, plugin your phone and start at step 8.

For the slow load speeds, are you still on the sprint lovers rom from the initial root, also can you grab the speed test app from the market.

Thanks Fred, Well, I am living with Sprint Lovers, if I need to change it, please suggest one. I am going to try to start over from Step 8 again as you suggest and will confirm you in 30 minutes.
Well, on web loading, I got the down load speed as .3 KBPS. please suggest how do I increase

Thanks Fred. Backed up the img now (Did I back up the factory img or the root img?)

But need help on increasing the speed or browser problem
Thaks in advance..

You backed up the partition that holds your 4G RSA keys, neither root nor stock, it's the same data.

Can you get the speed test market app so you can do a speed test?

is there a guide somewhere on how to use z4root and titanium back up before you start trying to root?

i downloaded z4root 1.3, did the temp root, installed the titanium back up root (do i need to buy titanium back up before i can use the root version?) and i got an error message saying that my phone wasn't rooted.. did i do something wrong? perhaps someone can give me a quick step by step on how to do this?

thanks all

I had the same experience, and didn't want to bother trying to manually install busybox, so I just bit the bullet and will have to start Angry Birds all over again. I honestly don't know what's up with Titanium not recognizing root.

step by step, easy as hell.

New to evo, but, with great instruction like this, no problem with rooting.

Thanks OP

Hi Guys...first time i tried this...and my phone just sits on the "HTC EVO 4g" white loading screen after step #19.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Browser is too slow even with 6MBPS WIFI

I have rooted my evo with Sprint Lovers as said in this thread and enjoying the rooting. since and then my browser trys to load every page (any webpage) I visit almost all the time and became too slow. Approx loading a page takes about 2 secs with out any pics.

Speed test results are on 3G - 1.3MBPS download 683KBPS Upload
With WIFI - 7.3MBPS download and 2.3MBPS Upload

So I tried with Dolphin, its the same case, So I suspecting its not only the browser issue. Cleared all data cookies, hostory, nothing helped. Settings are follows (imp ones), default settings, nothing changed

1. Load image- checked
2. Mobile View - checked
3. Enable java - Checked
4. Set Text Encoding - UTF-8 etc

Any help appreciated. If I do not fix it, I need to go back where I was... Please help...
