[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

I have rooted my evo with Sprint Lovers as said in this thread and enjoying the rooting. since and then my browser trys to load every page (any webpage) I visit almost all the time and became too slow. Approx loading a page takes about 2 secs with out any pics.

Speed test results are on 3G - 1.3MBPS download 683KBPS Upload
With WIFI - 7.3MBPS download and 2.3MBPS Upload

So I tried with Dolphin, its the same case, So I suspecting its not only the browser issue. Cleared all data cookies, hostory, nothing helped. Settings are follows (imp ones), default settings, nothing changed

1. Load image- checked
2. Mobile View - checked
3. Enable java - Checked
4. Set Text Encoding - UTF-8 etc

Any help appreciated. If I do not fix it, I need to go back where I was... Please help...

I had the same problem and just found the fix. Go to the market and download Ad Free.
Install the app and reboot. Should clear up the problem. It did for me.
Apparently, the rom had some of those files and needs the app.

Fred, maybe you should add this to the end of the instructions where you talk about Sprint Lovers?

I just want the hotspot app, i like the phone stock though so do I have to do all this work?

You can root, or you can pay $30/month.

This guide is probably the clearest written one I've seen yet. Once I figured out what my problem was when I first tried it, this took all of maybe 40 minutes.

I haven't had any issues at all with either Dolphin or the stock browser. Is that app required by everyone, or just those having problems?

If I root what happens with the offical updates from htc? I kinda want to avoid the updating and maintaining of roms.

My understanding is that if you root, you shouldn't accept any oem updates. I never gave rooting much thought myself until Sprint's pushed bloatware stunt with 3.7. It was one thing to live with their propietary apps, but I didn't appreciate having third party apps forced on me; especially trial apps!

So I rooted. I figure I now have much more control over what goes on my phone.

So basically after you root you'll be updating to better version and not installing any oem updates at all, it's basically am 6.5 and changing or maintaining different roms.

When Sprint/HTC release an update a rooted version is usually available literally within an hour or actually before it's released.

Hi Guys...first time i tried this...and my phone just sits on the "HTC EVO 4g" white loading screen after step #19.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

This happened to me as it just did not do anything.

So, I just did the step 20, where you type(or copy/paste) the next command line, and everything worked out.

Give that a try.

Last question, can I change back to the stock rom if I don't like the rooted version?

Sure, you can run unrevoked s-on which puts the default htc security back on and then run the htc RUU (rom update utility) program which will bring your phone completely back to stock.

hboot_2.xx_soff-V8.9.zip this file is unavailable now a new version is now available V9. will this work with your directions even thow the md5s dont match?

This will work, the V9 update was just for the new version of Sprint Lovers, I updated the guide earlier with the new link and md5 sum :).

Is this necessary or an advised step?? If we are already rooted, should I apply the new v9 version?

You don't need to, I don't know what is in the new Sprint Lover's update but check the thread from the OP to see if they added something you may want.

My command prompt isn't letting me type adb. I posted a thread and was told to come here. I am trying this using unrevoked forever. I am at the part on the command prompt where I am supposed to type 'adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/' and all it says after that is adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I am missing the 'RomManager.apk' file. The MD5 check matched. I am downloading the hboot_2.xx_soff-V9.zip again, but was wondering if anyone had this issue as well?

EDIT:
I got the apk from the web site. I was able to successfully root using the instructions. Thanks for taking the time to post them!!

You have change directories on your command prompt to the folder you extracted from the zip.

If you extracted the zip to c:\evoroot, then in Windows XP/Vista go to start, run, and type cmd and hit enter. Then type cd c:\evoroot

In Windows 7, open Windows Explorer (just double click my computer) and double click the c drive, then hold down the left shift key and right click on the evoroot folder and select open command window here.
