First you dont open the command prompt and type cmd, cmd is typed into run to open command prompt (cmd)
Second ignore the quotes "

first thing you do after cmd is open is type cd\ and then hit enter
you should be sitting with just C:\

where is the folder you uziped your files? If its on your desktop it would look like this
C:\Users\ProCision\Desktop\evofiles
quick way to get the path is - for windows xp look at the address bar - windows 7 hold shift and right click the folder and choose open in command prompt.

If you have windows 7 you should have something that looks like this
C:\Users\ProCision\Desktop\evofiles

if you have xp

in cmd type cd\ and then the path to your folder
cd\ C:\Users\ProCision\Desktop\evofiles

Thanks for your help again

what version of windows are you running?

windows xp and vista are done the same and win 7 is done differently

(Borrowed #5 from OP...thanks again thefredelement!!)
5. Open a command prompt (In windows XP & Vista go to start > run > type “cmd” > enter and type “cd c:evoroot”

– for windows 7 users open windows explorer and browse to c:, press the left shift key and right click on “evoroot”, select “open command window here”)

Basically in windows 7 where ever you put the evoroot folder you got to it hold down the left shift key(very important) and then right click the folder and select open command window here

This might help also to familiarize yourself with some of the basic commands you'll be using: Basic DOS commands

I bought an Evo on eBay and it should be getting to me early next week. I don't have the hardware, hboot, or any other version, nor did the listing say if it had ever been rooted. What steps should I take before beginning this process? I plan on rooting it basically as soon as I verify it's working as advertised, but I don't want to start a process unaware of what the previous owner may have attempted.

I just switched to Evo from Palm Pre last week and got rooted with this guide yesterday. Thanks it was a great help.

Boot Partition Failure

I am sure this has come up before, but I cant seem to find any thing that matches my description. I am new to these forums and it seems like everyone is incredibly helpful. I rooted my Evo using the method described here.

Everything went smoothly until I tried installing the rom. I am trying to install Sprint Lover 2.2 and every thing installs correctly until the boot partition. My screen looks like this:

[1] RADIO_V2 - OK
[2] RADIO_CUST - OK
[3] SYSTEM - OK
[4] USERDATA - OK
[5] WIMAX - OK
[6] BOOT - Fail-PU
Partition update fail!
Update Fail

My phone seems to work fine when i reboot it, but I just want to make sure that I didn't do anything incorrectly. Is there anything I can do to fix this? This is my first time rooting and I am worried I may have screwed something up.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Did you check the md5 of the download file?

Also, when you reboot are you on sprint lovers ROM?
