[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

1. Thank you Fred for all your help.

2. Tried to flash the radio's and still nothing so I unrooted the phone and still nothing so I had to call Sprint. They reflashed their side and all is good to go.

3. Now is there anyway to get back the contacts that she saved to the phone instead of to google.

Ahh Sprint! Could of saved you a night on the couch.

- Were the contacts that were saved to the phone ever backed up to the sdcard?

Howdy, guys.

Actually, I rooted my phone like long time ago. However, the charging port could not work properly lately, so I have to unroot it lately and took it back to Sprint store. After they fixed the port today, I would like to root my evo again.

I checked a few threads already, and I have to say, Fred, you are the man, rarely see anyone still keep this up like you do here. Correct me if i m wrong, it seems you used unrEVOked to root the phone. That's why then I checked unrEVOked website, and they provided the latest 3.32.

I wonder if it will the same if I used that 3.32 reflash package to root my evo, comparing with following Fred's guide here. I mean, it seems its much simpler by using 3.32 unrEVOked package. Any suggestion here? I mean, following the guide here or just directly use 3.32 unrEVOked?

Thank you.

Thanks! Keeping up is a good idea with a thread like this, I imagine it helps a lot of people.

If you have rooted before and you're comfortable with getting around adb in case you ever need to, then I would suggest using unrevoked. It's WAY faster and a ton easier.

ok... this doesnt make sense... I just got a replacement EVO and doing this method since its the newer 3.7 version. I did it EXACTLY step by step... and had no problems what-so-ever... and got to the last step and rebooted... and it loaded and still looked normal and i was all WTF and went to phone info and its completely STOCK... Also seems like its not even rooted.

I cant even get to bootloader, it just vibrates 3 times and doesnt do anything. Its liek the Root never stuck, and flashing the ROM never stuck. Doesnt make any sense. I have never been this stumped before.

EDIT: Ok i redid everything and seems like it actually flashed the ROM and i verified root user also. time for ROM manager and some flashing I hope.

on step 19 do i need to wait for it to get past the htc evo white screen or just move on

Yeah, wait for it to boot, or when you hear the USB re-connecting on your computer, once adb is up you can reboot it with the command to bring it back to the bootloader.

I have a problem!!! got to step 19 and on the reboot my computer will not recognize the driver for the phone. and the phone is not loading sd card on the phone either. please help I don't know what else to do.

are there rootfiles anywhere else except the provided? it is saying I have to wait an hour to download again, b/c the md5 checker did not match!! any other way to get this sooner.. this is my first time attempting to root!! thank you

Just getting ready to root again after my phone was replaced (nightmare all by itself). Anyway, thought I'd pop in here and see if there were any changes of which I should be aware. Still 2.2, Baseband 2.15.00.11.19, Kernel 2.6.32.17-gee557fd htc-kernel@and18-2 #15, Build 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release-keys, and WebKit3.1; RPI 1.90_003.

Last time I followed the instructions here which were awesome! And all the extra help and handholding was much, much appreciated.

But I'm still pretty ignorant about how to do stuff, so will need to follow through this exactly as written again. Is there a place to lead me by the hand about how to flash a new ROM, etc.

Am I better off waiting for someday Gingerbread, or ??

Thanks!

Whew! Okay ... managed to get through this again! Second time around makes a teensy bit more sense than the first time. My brain's still struggling to get through this. Somehow understanding DOS in the way back long ago made far more sense ...

Thanks again!

Oh, btw ... I ended up finding and using my previous version of the root files (#4) as I was totally unable to download a new copy. The Multiupload link flatly wouldn't work, and I tried every one of the mirrors too. On a couple of them the file was gone. On another my virus scanner said the file was infected, and the others just took me to advertising sites. Bleagh.

I want to root my phone but I dont want to use custom Roms, just want to SOFF so I can use my phone the way I want. Is there a method for this without using Roms? Also I dont want to lose 4G RSA? Can I unroot for OTA updates then re-root once Im done?

Your best bet would be to root your phone, but install one of the OFFICIAL ROOTED Sprint ROMs (preferably from the latest OTA update). This just ensures that everything will run smoothly on your unrooted phone: READ FIRST! - Rooting, Solutions to Problems, the Answer to Life (Updated:5/3/11)
Go to the Rooting Information section and it will walk you through the steps for rooting. Beginning of the 2nd post will provide links to the OFFICIAL ROOTED Sprint ROMs for download.

I HIGHLY recommend using the GUIDE linked below for rooting your phone. I used it and the screenshots helped the process along because you can see what the output should look like. It takes about 30 minutes and instead of flashing the Sprint Lovers ROM provided within that tutorial, just flash the OFFICIAL ROOTED Sprint ROM that you downloaded previously instead. That should be the only difference.

Once you're rooted, your best bet would be to flash one of the OFFICIAL ROMs that are made for unrooted phones instead of accepting OTA updates. You can usually find OFFICIAL ROOTED versions of upcoming OTA updates a day or two before they're actually pushed over the air. So you'll be ahead of the curve, as well. Nothing is different in those ROMs except the fact that it allows you to use them with an unrooted phone. No customizations or tweaks have been done to them whatsoever. That's going to be the safest and easiest way.

Hope all this helped! I know it's a lot at first... but if you have any questions, just search for it on the forums or make a topic if it has never been asked before. Someone is always willing to help.

Happy rooting!

Thanks for the info, I have one last question. What is the difference between a one click root methods like unrevoked and auto root?

okay i know im gonna get screamed at but here we go.
