Guide to rooting phone with HBOOT 2.18.0001

Ok. Finally got it to work.

what I had to do was move all the files over to my SD Card prior to doing step 13. After that everything went smooth. Was really easy actually once I got everything where it needed to go.

However, I am still experiencing the rebooting crap that is common with these EVO 4G's. I read somewhere that downgrading to Froyo was a solution. Anyone know anything about that?

alot good roms here i use a 3.0 rom and it works great

I have evo 4g 2.3.5, I have done the process from htcdev all the way to the end, Got the code and when I type in command prom the last part (fastboot oem identifier token) I know this is not the exact but I typed in the exact and it would say not not found or not recognized. I cannot get past this part? I have the code put into an android file in c drive. Not sure how to get beyond this point, Is it possible I am just not allowed to do this with this phone? Was I suppose to transfer any files to my sd card as I did not see that in the instructions and did not do this? :-\

I noticed the last post was a few months ago. Do any of these methods actually work now? Have tried a number of them, and there is always some issue. Tried to use the method above and can't find the 3 files anywhere for the bootloader. I've read tons of forum posts, but there is so much info and methods, I think I'm confused now. Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm looking for a root that actually works.......

I used this method on both my & my wife's Evo's. it worked great. suggest using amon ra in stead of clockwork.
I found a you tube vid either on this forum or on xda, and followed both the text instructions & the video while I did my phone.

Thank you for your help! I think everything worked and I have Superuser. But, how can I delete the Sprint bloatware? BTW, I still get S-On on the bootloader screen. Is there a particular app I should use to remove the Sprint apps? It doesn't offer an option to uninstall them from the manage applications screen.

Titanium Backup.

Taking no credit to this one. Did root my friends phone using this method & its a lifesaver in fact being that i didnt have to roll back the update on the phone or do something else... So heres for those who have the slightest clue & are wondering how to root their phones with this HBOOT. Only thing is that this doesnt gain s-off but just unlocks the bootloader rest of the work is done from a command line promt. Read up & have fun. Btw it is possible to flash other forms of recoveries such as amon_ra or twrp being your preference...
I get the following error message at step 11 when I run the flash recovery command:

C:\android>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (3120 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.891s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.313s
Everything seems to fail from that point. If i could get some help from that point, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I did not realize that rooting my phone would lose everything. Not thrilled with losing all those text messages. I should have researched this more. *sigh, whimper*

Also, I'm having issue with Android Mate - it doesn't want to delete the damn bloatware. So far this rooting thing isn't working out for me.

Sorry to hear your rooting experience is not working out as planned. Going forward, I have been able to back up my text messages with SMS Backup & Restore. I have also been able to remove bloatware using Titanium Backup.

Now that your rooted, you might as well try a new ROM. I have had a good experience with MikG.

MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

[ROM] - [MikRoms] - [3/9/2012] - MikG v3.11 - Re-Engineered GB Sense 2.1 + 3.0 - xda-developers

Good luck.

So it wont effect flashing any new roms? I curious why anyone would want to do the extra steps to achieve S-Off

No, it won't. It's more of a "power user" thing. Previously (before HTC provided a bootloader unlocking method), S-OFF was the only way to flash custom ROMs. But since that's no longer the case, S-OFF is more of a novelty than anything else (at least for the common user).

HELP!
Please someone help me. I took a phone to a place to get unlocked so i could use it with my carrior, those people hard locked my phone. I hard booted it but its still locked up. Its asking for a pin. can anyone help me? I really need a phone. Im disabled and cant go without a phone thanks....

Ok, so this method actually worked as was indeed fairly easy to do. Thanks!
Now, the big question is how does one UNDO it...
This [How To] Unroot and return to stock [RUU Method] does not work apparently.
Any other suggestions and lest anyone ask I wish to unroot because my bluetooth no longer works correctly and OTA updates are down as well.

Thanks

All you have to do is relock your bootloader as per the HTCDev instructions (boot into fastboot, connect to computer, run command "fastboot oem lock" from folder where fastboot.exe is located), and then use the latest RUU (4.67) to flash back to stock.

OK, that helps a lot.
Where do I get the latest RUU and how would i apply it?
Thanks!!

NM - I figured it out! I found the 4.67 RUU in the list at RUU. Wow! Finally!

Thanks! Again!
