Preface:

I think that is complete and utter BS that cell phone companies charge you $20 to $30 a month for USB tethering!

It's not like your getting anything extra. The data you view on your cell is the same on your netbook/tablet/laptop etc, the same cap still applies, so why pay extra for something that should be free?:p

Now, what is the easiest way to tether a optimus S to a laptop/netbook, etc and bypass the tethering fee?

There are several ways to do this, either by staying on an older baseband and using hotspot widget or by rooting. Searching the forums will show you exactly how.

That being said, I disagree completely with your preface. If Sprint capped data or sold it in tiers, then I'd agree with you - if I buy 5gigs of data, I should be able to use it however I want. Who cares if it's from my laptop, tablet, or phone - once the 5gigs are up, they are up. However, Sprint gives us unlimited data, which is super nice for those of us that stream music, radio, and sports constantly. However, the only way their network can realistically handle this is if it's unlimited data capped by the limit of what our phones can physically handle. If instead you are using it as your primary ISP hooked up to a full computer for huge downloads, you are taking up far more network than what you should be, and you should be charged extra.

That being said, I rooted and custom ROMed my phone, and I do use tether about once a month for about 2 minutes at a time when I need to email out a document that is on my laptop and I'm not at a wifi hotspot. So I guess I'm a hypocrite.

I use wifi hotspot every now and again when my home internet goes down (which is quite often - comcast sucks here) but other than that I use it when in my car and need to do something important...

I dont see whats wrong with an occasional use, but when using it as a primary isp, i do agree that there is too much being used
