Hands free call from headset

Hi, I'm a fresh convert from iphone, it's been a rough start, but it's getting better. I drive for work a lot, and with my iphone, I could hold the middle button on the ear buds and say call contact, to make a call, now with the s9 and the ear buds, it only works when the phone is unlocked. I have gone into google settings and enabled the wired mic access while the phone is locked, but it wont access my contacts, just relays random internet searches for whatever contact I'm trying to call. If I try the middle button when the phones unlocked, it works. What gives?

Use Bixby for voice commands.

Just a thought but did you made the ear buds as a trusted agent to by pass the lock requirement?

I'm not sure I did, how do I do that?

I can't get anything from bixby when the phones locked either.
