has anyone else's EVO been really laggy lately?

Hey everyone!

My roommate and I both have EVO's and have both noticed our phones being REALLY laggy lately.

Neither of us is rooted or run ATK's...and can't think of anything we've installed that has caused the problem. Usually if one of us has a problem we can pinpoint it but the fact that we both are having lag going from apps to home screen suggests that maybe it's not just us.

I'd appreciate if any other EVO users could let us know if they've seen this. We're in WI if it matters.

Thanks!

Come to think of it my car is running kinda slower. I haven't really done anything different to it....

Not to be rude, but it's kinda hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue is with your phones without more detail. What you can try to do is stop services and apps that are running and see how that goes. I would suggest try restarting first, see how performance is with various sets of tests--opening browser, mail, making phone call--and then stopping apps that you have running one by one and see how it helps if at all.

That is unbelievable that people have accepted having to swap out 2 or even three batteries to get through the day!! The Evo should never been released if this is the case.....

I get 24-40 hours of battery life. Needless to say but I do not swap out batteries, in fact I love my battery life. The Evo just needs some TLC and configuration.

Mine has been laggy, I tried the different steps, it's better, but I agree that the Epic is a bit faster/smoother even with 2.1. One thing I have wondered about, everyone says don't use a task killer, but when I check, tons of stuff is always running whether I want it too or not. Using a task killer seems to work for a little bit but even a startup killer wont keep stuff from running that doesn't need too.

Task Killers are not good, and your doing more harm to the phone. It will just keep restarting those apps after you kill them. Don't let those running apps fool you, they are using hardly anything. Again AndroidCentral has done numerous articles on "why not to use task killers". Remember that the Epic is smoother, because Touchwiz is a much lighter launcher then Sense. Once you switch to ADW or Launcherpro it's just as fast and smooth.

I had similar lagging issues as everyone else. Especially when toggling 4g. I did a factory reset, and only installed the apps I actually used, now I have no issues whatsoever.

I have since found a better way to keep tabs on rogue apps: Watchdog.

It sits in the background and monitors processes, if any app takes too much CPU for too long, it will alert you. Way more efficient than a factory reset to identify problem apps.

It _does_ use a bit of power itself, so I only install it when I suspect a new app is misbehaving. But it is an excellent tool.

Needs better software for 4G. Turning it on causes everything to lag and there is a long lag for the 4G radio to turn on, whereas 3G is pretty much instantaneous.

Do you ever wonder whether this might be intentional to discourage use of 4G? I don't see why Sprint would want to do this, but they certainly are making it easy for evo users to want to avoid casually turning on 4G unless they are going to really make use of the higher speeds.

I turn on 4G seldomly now because of the lagging issues and the time it takes to turn on the 4G radio.

There is some sort of bug when connected to 4G that causes the EVO to become laggy (processor and device are slow to respond to commands, not laggy as in network speeds) Its been talked about on several threads but since a lot of people still dont have 4G its not as widely known as other issues, like the text messags jumping to different threads.

Heres something to consider (this is for the people who have battery issues)
My first WM device was the Mogul, 1500mAh battery running windows mobile 6.1 on a 500mhz processor and a smaller screen.
NOW i am using an EVO with a 1Ghz processor and a screen almost 40% larger. Did i mention i am still on a 1500mAh battery . Think about it.
Screens are larger, processors are twice as fast, batteries are almost the same.
Its no wonder we (some, not all) have battery problems. The battery technology has not stayed up with the screens or processorrs.

I don't think that's the case. I have read In a few places that 4G is cheaper to run than 3G. It's just new tech and service isn't up to snuff yet. Check coverage maps and there are dead zones everywhere. It'll get better.

4g is definitely to blame for lag issues. I never use it unless 3g is congested. I've read in other places that using 4g causes a bunch of errors if you have the right monitoring program running to see it. It sux, and I wish sprint would fix it. They are charging me for a service that is almost unusable.

Btw I am rooted and using launcher pro. I have Systempanel pro and keep an eye on what is running in the background. I also don't install junk apps either.

Pandora skipping is another issue altogether. It's an android/evo issue that drives me crazy. Has nothing to do with network quality. Other music streaming Apps have the same issue, so it's not just Pandora.
Sent from my iPhone j/k!

If you want longer battery life then install juice defender. Can gratly increase life by turning off data when screen is off and other things as well

I notice a major lag when toggling the 4g on and off. One thing I do to clear up the laggy-ness is to kill the HTC Sense UI. It will reload itself when you go back to the home screen and speed things up. Give that a try.

I've accepted the advantages of having the ability to swap. I'd rather wait for a reboot than a partial or full charge. I also don't have to worry about my usage. With an 1800 mAH battery I can get over 18 hours of light use and around 24 with very light. I usually get 12-15 hours.

Laggy Evo

I live in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area and saw inconsistent 4G Signal strength for about a month. My download speeds would drop periodically to 128-512kbs and then I would get my normal 4-6mbs at other times. Drove me crazy. I figure if I'm paying for the 4G I should get 4G. Had a hard reset done and didn't fix the problem. Come to find out that Sprint has been working on their network and causing the fluctuations in signal strength. They are finally done here and the signal strength is better than what is was before.

Be patient and wait before you have a reset done and lose all your info and apps.

As for your problem being a hardware issue, I know a lot of people bash the Task killers but I'm a firm believer in the Advanced Task Killer for Froyo. I kill my apps along with the task killer about every hour and my phone runs smooth. I can always tell when a bunch of apps load in the background because the performance suffers. I kill all the apps and it instantly runs smooth again.

Hope that helps.

I agree with you WHOLE HEARTADELY!!!!! If you purchase a product you are NOT supposed to have to do this many things just to make you phone perform as it is supposed to..Who wants to buy let alone carry 3 daggum batterys..This statement alone validifies my statement that the battery performance on this thing sucks big!!! I SHOULD NOT have to change kernels or roms just to get a smoother and suppossedly better battery life..This is sickening and should be against the law!!!

Now this is just plane old silly to believe something like this..LMAO..Not one person not even a fanboy has claimed to be able to use this phone for 24 hours on a full charge..This is the problem..people like this that worship their phones that lie on it to make a point. Even a BlackBerry gets this much B. Life even the Iphone which all factually and notably have significant B. life over the evo or any other Android phone on the market..SMDH

When I power my phone up (reboot), it starts up and after about 5 minutes it does a spontaneous reboot. It seem to be related to how much free ROM I have (about 50 MB). Is this normal? If not, what causes it and how can I fix it. It is totally stock software with no rooting or other mods.

I noticed lag for the past week. I then noticed my 3g consistently running when off WiFi. I then turned off all auto updates on my downloaded apps. I then noticed my lag went away.

Here's a thought... Just a shot in the dark but since I've never seen this behavior described here or at XDA I thought I'd share, because I can replicate it pretty easily.

Are those of you experiencing random lag and/or music stutter also leaving your Wifi on most of the time? I ask because I've noticed that if I sit inside my car and drive out to the driveway (then stop there) I find myself pretty much at the very edge of my home router's range, AND when I do that and my wifi connection drops or starts struggling to remain connected I instantly start hearing music playback stuttering (while streamed over bluetooth to the car) and it even becomes sluggish to unlock and turn off wifi some times.

Now you would think something that obvious would be pretty widely known by the community, but the thing is it only happens when you sit at the very edge of a wifi network. If I break the connection relatively briskly by just driving away after I get in the car then it NEVER happens... However if I go stand in the same ten foot square of space it's really easy to reproduce. People that leave wifi on all the time could be unwittingly wandering in and out of range of known networks and seeing the very same behavior!

There's no 4G down here to test with and I've never experienced lag when using it in Maryland or Boston but I suspect the lag many experience when using it could be attributed to similar factors... e.g. low or poor signal (the standard signal strength indicator can be pretty unreliable so I wouldn't make any judgments based on that either).
