Exercise capabilities

Has anyone used the S3 for working out yet?

I'm currently using a MS Band 2 and I enjoy the full range of exercise options. I can go to my Health Dashboard and either create my own workout or download workouts from various exercise partners, then sync that workout to my Band. Then my Band goes through the various exercises, telling me how many reps or time for that exercise, when to rest, etc.

Is this functionality available in the S Health app or some other app?

Re: Exercise capabilities

I have used it to go for a quick bike ride, and I feel it tracked my progress way better than the gear fit 2, and I also like the fact that when I would stop at a red light it would detect it super quick and pause the time

Having also come from the Band 2 (my third as the strap kept breaking) you're currently in for a world of disappointment in my opinion. On base spec the band 2 does the basics in terms of running and bike tracking better (you can GPS lock before starting). The custom workouts as you say in MS health are much better than the S health so far as I can work out. Also I can't choose the sports options on my S3, for example if I want to play football (Soccer). On my Band I had an option for it and it would track how far I ran etc whilst playing. The S3 I have to choose other workout and it doesn't give me any stats, just the time and overall calorie burn.
The said there are apps for the S3, like pear sports which offer workouts, but you can't customise them as far as I can see.

So far the S3 is a massively superior smartwatch obviously, but the fitness isn't doing what my band did for me, but I did have a year of getting used to the band and setting up workouts etc, so I imagine it will get better, but there are some obvious things missing that literally every other sports tracker has...

Re: Exercise capabilities

The S3 should track things like football under the dynamic workout exercise in the auto detect setting.
I've used a gear fit 2 for 6 months so this is fairly similar. It's great for runs and walks, but for general gym stuff is just OK. The lack of heart rate monitoring on the other workout bothered me at first, but now it doesn't.
The main thing I'd like to do is edit workouts. It seems on oversight that when on a treadmill, you can't edit the distance you covered.
But, it's consistent. For me the calories seem low, but as they're always low it's not an issue when i want to track results and progress.

So when you get on the treadmill, does the S3 realize you don't need the gps, so it doesn't engage it?

The dynamic workout thing was triggering all the time,so I turned it off. Also when I'm playing football I want to be able to use the time function. Seems a little silly I can't trigger a workout to track those sort of things. Especially considering football is a sports option on the S health app, just not on the watch.

Re: Exercise capabilities

You should be able to use the watch as normal while it's tracking you playing football. It will keep tracking in the background meaning you can check the time etc.

I agree though, if there is an option in S Health for a sport, it should also be on the Gear.

Sounds like I'll continue using my Band 2 for my fitness activities. I can pair my Band to my S7 and just use it when I workout, at least until and if ,the fitness tracking improves. I guess I can start urging Samsung to look at how the Band 2 has developed the fitness tracking.

Re: Exercise capabilities

Check out the partner apps as well. There may be one that offers the functionality for what you are looking for.

Re: Exercise capabilities

S-Health app on phone has a ridiculous amount of a activities to track, including football, see pic. But I don't see a way to select the workout on GS3 S-Health app, see pics. Football may just be a "other workout" on S-Health app on watch. If someone knows how to add other workout types to S-Health app o watch lemme know.
