Has P6 Fingerprint improved vastly now compared to initial release??

Hi there,

I'm one of those early buyers of P6 who ended up returning the phone because of the many issues but mostly due to the fingerprint reader above all else. I didn't want to miss the return window. I'm reading that after many months of updates, the fingerprint reader is a lot better now and thinking about getting the phone again. How do you feel? Has the fingerprint reader improved a lot? Does it get at least 8/10 attempts? Is it finally inline with Samsung??

Yes. It's definitely better (at least in my experience). I bought mine about 2 months ago, and it was TERRIBLE at that point. If I had to give it a success percentage, it was about 20%, no hyperbole. Now it's a decent 90%, and I've been every pleased. There's still a half-second transition, but I'm okay with it. It's definitely a huge improvement...for me, at least.

This is WITH a generic $5 tempered glass screen protector from Amazon...another reason to go regular over Pro. Curved glass screen protectors are way more expensive and complicated.

I got mine at the beginning of April and it compares very favorably to the fps on my OnePlus 7 Pro. It does a little bit worse in direct sunlight but that's to be expected.

Improved, but I would not say vastly. Still what I consider the phone's biggest flaw and largest source of frustration for me.

Still unreliable works only 60% of the time for me. With a screen protector or dirty hands even worse. By far the biggest issue with the phone.

I've had my P6Pro since November. I never use screen protectors. From everything I've read on the forum, it makes an enormous difference if your hands have a lot of rough exposure.

I'm self-employed and work in my own home office. My hands have no rough exposure and are always clean. My FPS has been excellent from the beginning. I never have to resort to my PIN so I would say my FPS works 100% of the time. Occasionally I require a second read, but that's just a quick replacement, and the second read invariably works. I'm quite pleased with my FPS.

I'm using mine with a unicorn beetle case with a built-in screen protector and I have very few problems. Maybe I'm an isolated case but it works very reliably for me.

It improved a little with a patch months ago, but it's still slow and inconsistent. 'Vastly' imrpoved? No I don't believe so. Even if it were 100% accurate, it'd still be the slowest in-screen fingerprint scanner on a phone.

Is it finally inline with Samsung? Nope, not even close. The Samsung scanner (in the S21 and S22) is leaps and bounds better than the Pixel 6 scanner. Better, newer technology, much more accurate and much faster.

However if you're interrested in the Pixel 6 again, try purchasing it again and seeing how you like the fingerprint scanner this time. You should still have a two week return window with Google, so if it's still not acceptable to you, you have the opportunity to return it.

When being taken out of my pocket, it still has to be tapped to be woken up for me. The screen stays dark until I tap to wake it up so I can see the fingerprint icon, then I've got to tap it again to unlock. That's one of the things that still bugs me about the experience, is that it's slow to react to changing environmental and lighting conditions.

I think I had some of these FPS issues right up until I installed the final Android beta 12 update. I just got used to tapping the sensor 2 or 3 times and then yes, the pin pad would pop up! however, after the 12 beta update, of have to say the success rate is near 100%. I'd base the part that is not near due to user error. sometimes I just don't put my phone exactly on the sensor and that may create a problem but even then it gets it. or sometimes I might have something on my finger and that might create an issue but it's rare.

At home, at my desk it is ok... Get's it about 80 percent of the time. Out in the world... I get 50% at best. :-\

It works fine, you just have to apply some pressure and press for a sec. Subpar though when compared to oneplus and certainly Samsung devices.
