Hating this update!!

So, my phone did a software update a couple days ago, and I hate it. Now, with every update there's always at least one change I'm not particularly fond of, but usually I grow accustomed to it and it doesn't bother me. That's not going to happen this time. With this new update, it no longer shows me the text previews on the lock screen. In fact, it won't show me any of the information I want on my lock screen. I can't see if I have notifications, missed calls, messages, NOTHING. If I miss a text/call and don't hear it, the only way I know is if I unlock my phone. No more activating the screen to check it real quick. This is very inconvenient if I happen to get a text in a meeting. I can no longer stealthily check to see who it's from in case it's important enough to excuse myself from the meeting (I have children, so this instance may arise).
Also, my phone no longer vibrates when ringing, and the option to turn that on is grayed out. This feature is important to me, as half the time I don't hear my ringtone, but I do feel/hear it vibrating. Anyone have any solutions to these issues?

Assuming that the update was to 5.0 (you didn't mention what version you updated to), Did you reboot your phone after the update? I powered my phone off and back on after the 5.0 update (I also cleared any running apps and the data cache) and have encountered no problems with the 5.0 update so far (after more than a month). Don't know if I am just lucky or those steps actually helped. And the notifications on the lock screen are working fine.....

My model number says SAMSUNG-GM-870A, and it updated to 5.0. I think it restarted automatically after the update, but I will try restarting it again.

Well, restarting seemed to activate the vibrate when ringing option. That works now. But messages are still not showing up on the lock screen. I double checked the settings, but display preview on lock screen is still checked. It's just not doing it for some reason. =-/

The SM-G870A?

You have the carrier model of the S5, manufactured specifically for AT&T, the Galaxy S5 Active on AT&T's own version of Lollipop. This will differ from the majority of S5's on here which are SM-G900*. It is important to mention this when seeking advice as the wrong model information could damage your phone.

You could try wiping the cache partition to clear out any rubbish left over from your last firmware. This is safe to do and does not affect your data. For how to do this, see #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

If you go to settings, sounds and notifications and scroll down to notifications there's a button for while locked, it gives you three options for your lock screen, I was having the same problem when I updated yesterday took some playing but if you change it to show all your notifications will go back to showing up on your lock screen, if you don't want the message previewed on the screen but still want it to show that you got a text just click the hide sensitive content. It's not exactly the same as before but closer then not. I had a big problem with this part of the update too.

Where did all my assigned ringtones go, and - since the 'path' is now gone - how do I reassign them?
(Is the android "Music" app mucking it up? I tried a workaround by adding files to said app, but I can't figure out how to even add files.)

That fixed it! I don't necessarily like having all my game notifications displayed the way they are now, as it clutters up the lock screen more, but at least the text notification is visible now, so the important part is solved. Thank you! :-)
