Have a couple questions about rooting my droid

AllDroid - View topic - [ROM] Bugless Beauty V0.8.7 (2/9/10)

and follow the nandroid directions

-Update (if available) all of your apps before installing
-Backup any files you wish to restore, this will wipe /data
-Extract the files from the archive using WinRAR or a similar program
-Place the extracted folder (the ROM) into the "nandroid" folder on your sdcard
-Reboot into recovery mode
-Wipe data/factory reset
-Wipe cache partition
-Backup/Restore
-Advanced Nandroid Restore
-Choose backup (select the ROM)
-Perform Restore
-Enjoy!

what's the difference between the update.zip no data loss method, and the nandroid backup method? wouldn't i want the one with no data loss? what's special about the nandroid method?

Ok. I was able to get bugless beast 0.8.7 installed on my phone. it's pretty slick. i noticed since i got rid of the sholes rom, i can't use setcpu to overclock anymore. this must be because the bugless beast rom doesn't have built in kernels for overclocking...fair enough. i read a whole bunch of how-tos for overclocking, but i have no idea what it's talking about. it talks about running adb shell something or other, and that's where i get lost. It goes straight from directions i understand, like "copy onto sd card, reboot into recovery consolse" right to something about adb shells or scripts or something. i'm lost. these instructions are probably assuming i have some sort of environment already installed somewhere, which i'm pretty sure i do not. bugless beast works great..now i just need my 800mhz overclock.

Bugless Beast should come overclocked to 1ghz already actually. make sure you select auto on setcpu and it should show at 1ghz. if not, overclocking is very easy.

nope. i installed bugless beast, setcpu was set to auto detect, and it only lets me go up to 550mhz. i tried it multiple times, no dice.

So...after hours of messing around trying to get a stupid kernel installed for overclocking (couldn't get the adb shell to work), messing with busybox, getting all sorts of confused...i did the following:

used sholesmod to flash back to stock, no root
used sholesmod to root the phone
updated recovery with sholesmod, it installs sholes rom by default
flashed bugless beast over the sholes rom
now i have overclocking and a super stable rom. good stuff.
