did i brake my digitizer or just my screen?

I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S4 the screen is smashed and it no longer lights up it stays black.

You would have probably broke your digitizer.The digitizer by definition is a device used to convert analog signals into digitial signals. You can use the phone even if there are some cracks on screen but in your case as you say that it doesn't lit up then it could be the digitizer.
