Having fun with OK Google

I've only just discovered all the shortcuts you can add in Google Assistant to really personalise it. It makes it far more usable to me now. One example I set up is for fuel. For my work vehicle we can only use Shell stations so I set a shortcut for when I say "OK Google... We better get some fuel" it starts Google Maps navigation to my nearest Shell station.
Another is "OK Google... Save my sanity" and it automatically starts playing Mickey Mouse Clubhouse videos on YouTube for my crazy 2yr old daughter.
I just wish the "Hey Google" command would make its way to my phone now

Hey Google is available now works on my pixel 2 XL.

Try it in a car with Android Auto -- it is pretty fun :). It uses the mic in my truck to listen for "OK Google" to do things for me.

You must have the only pixel 2 that is able to do that then. It's broken on most.

I have a Pixel 2 XL. It worked on my previous phones as well (LG G6 / Samsung Galaxy S8+).

Did you ensure to set Android Auto to allow it? If not that could very well be the cause.

It's not even android auto that's broken, you can't use assistant at all if you're connected via bluetooth with this phone.

If you're using Android Auto that takes over as the GA. I can still ask it to play music, find directions, read my messages, send texts, calls, etc. -- So I am not understanding what you're missing?

This is with AA connected via cable and my phone also connected to BT in my truck.

I'm anti cable unless I'm charging.^^^

For short trips (work/etc.) I just use BT and use my trucks commands for calling or whatever.

For long trips having the GPS on screen is nice.

Also ensure you have this set.

I don't think Android Auto uses bluetooth. At least it doesn't in my VW. I use a USB cable to connect.

What makes you say "most"? I know you're having troubles, and that's frustrating, bit how do you know that it doesn't work on "most" Pixel 2 XLs?

Ah so that is specific for using the actual assistant via the phone -- not with Android Auto. Android Auto uses a cable in order to work. It uses BT for some functions but I assume since "OK Google" works it must be using the cable. Have you tried using AA at all?

Ah that's it. I didn't realise AA through a car or head unit doesn't use Bluetooth for commands. Would only be an issue for someone using AA standalone on the phone.

Yep. Android Auto with a dash requires a cable. It is just way too much data to send over bluetooth for the phone to communicate with the dash.

Because Google have said in their support forums that Assistant won't work over Bluetooth unless you connect to a Bluetooth 5.0 device.

Ok interesting that will eliminate a lot of Bluetooth devices

I am sure it is a bug and not an intentional thing for it to not work.
Correct and thinking about this more, I'm almost positive my car is not 5.0 and it will pair and work with that, solo only by itself thought, not if multiple devices are connected
