Maybe I'm spoiled bc my previous phone was the iPhone 4 but the battery life seems pretty bad on the fascinate. Here is what I've noticed.

1. With using task manager I killed most of the apps and with moderate use all day I was able to last about 13 hours before the battery died. Wifi and gps seem to be battery killers.

2. Extremely slow charge time. It was at 8% and took 3 HOURS to charge.

Is this normal? Also is there an aftermarket battery (not the fat battery offered by verizon) that fits in the regular casing that will last longer?

I had similar problems with my first one (and I had come from an iPhone too (3G), so I was particularly disappointed by the battery life as well). I ended up returning the phone and picked up another Friday, and the battery life is much better on this one. I'm testing it now, and it's looking like I'll get at least 36 hours out of a charge. Here's some things to watch for:

Signal strength has a big impact on battery life. Make sure you dial *22899 to update the settings. Supposedly this somehow sets the local towers or something so you get a stronger signal.

If you don't mind rooting, you can remove/disable a lot of the pre-installed apps like Skype, CityID, etc. You can find all the info you need on this here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/34208-apps-safe-remove-once-rooted.html. This is the only thing I did different between my first and second phones, and I went from 8 to 10 hour battery life to upwards of 36 hours.

Then there's always the possibility you got a bad phone and/or battery. I did notice my first one charged painfully slowly too. The new one seems better, but I'd have to charge it a few times to say for sure. But even if it still charges slowly, it certainly lasts far longer.

You might want to download battery history from the market. If you check the Partial wake report, it will show you applications that prevent your phone from sleeping. I found I had a few apps that I didn't really use and were eating my battery. I uninstalled them and it is a night and day difference.
