Headphone volume increase leads to "unfortunately system ui has stopped"

AC Question

A couple of weeks after I got my 5x I started getting this error: increasing the media volume while headphones are plugged in makes a "unfortunately system ui has stopped" error popup. This means I can only listen at low volume on headphones. It happens whether I change the volume via the up/down buttons, or using the on screen UI. It seems to be exactly where the "listening at high volume may damage your hearing" warning would normally occur.

I've also found a second way of reproducing the error now: moving the data usage limit below the currently used amount. Or tapping the notification once this has happened.

I've got screenshots if it's any help.

And the problem is still present in safe mode.

Anyone got any idea on the cause or a solution? Be nice to fix this without a factory reset!

The problem is with the screen overlay and permissions.

Open settings , go to Apps . under apps click on the wrench tool (settings icon)

Under that go to draw over other apps.

Click the menu option and select show system apps. Turn on screen overlay for system UI app.

This should solve your problem. The reason this happens is because you aren't allowing the system to display warning messages or prompts since overlay is off. So it force closes instead of handling the exception and displaying a message.

Many many thanks!
I thought it was Android 6.x fault ... instead I was the culprit. I remember having messed up with the screen overlay long time ago when I installed Pokemon Go (I know, I know ...)
I rarely use headphones on my Nexus 5 so I didn't notice the 'system UI stopped' problem immediately and consequently I didn't make the connection with the settings.

It doesn't work for me.
I can't change the System UI to draw over other apps.
The icon to drag and allow the change is not working, like disabled.
What else can I do?
The volume now is right at the middle and totally can't increase.

Please help me :)

Hi,
Can you please help me, I'm unable to change the setting, it seems like its disabled. I can't drag the icon to allow System UI to Draw Over Other Apps.
