Headphones cause the phone to lock itself when changing volume, why does it do this?

I have a Oneplus 2 and every time I plug in headphones and raise the volume to a certain point I get a black screen and the phone locks, but as long as I have the volume below that point it works as it usually does. Have tested and changed headphones but the same problem arises.
