Heating issue

I had hot spot on for ten minutes and it reached 118f. Id rather chip and phone manufacturers work on heating issues rather than best specs

I have a brand new T-Mobile Branded G4, and I am consistently having this issue. The top of the phone, near the earpiece gets uncomfortably hot. This also seems to be killing the battery. I have yet to make it through a day without charging.

I notice it gets pretty warm/hot up near the buttons during extended use, which during this time the battery drains like crazy. I've learned to be conscious of keeping brightness as low as possible (but still able to see everything) , kill unneeded/unused background processes and apps that I'm finished using for a period of time. Seems to help.. A pain but now that I've trained myself to do this, it's not so bad. Battery and Temps seem to stay decent with ambient Temps are low. Not sure if it's a venting issue or what.

Anyone else experiencing excessive heat in the upper part of this phone? Just running YouTube vids for a few minutes and it's getting abnormally hot.

My G4 is 6 days old. Glad I saw this post. Today I had navigation on going home from work. Went to TMO store and handed hot phone to associate. She wondered what I was doing. Of course. She wanted me to bring in box and receipt for exchange. That, I will do.

Edit; Friday night I boxed up the G4 with the receipt. Took it in to the store yesterday. The rep treated me like I didn't know anything about these devices but ran diagnostic on his computer which produced nothing. I managed to keep from blowing up on him and walked out. He just didn't comprehend the difference between warm and hot. I did a factory reset then didn't let the app flood go by itself. I selcted a few then did reboot. Then repeated till I had what I wanted on here. Right now, I have 7 hours up time with near 4 hours SOT. I couldn't do that a few days ago

mine gets hot when video chatting for a little bit. the other day, I was outside (it was kind of hot outside) and I was video chatting for about 30 minutes using hangouts and my phone shut off. It had a message that my phone was too hot and it was turning off for precautionary reasons.

Just from what you're saying - it's a bad device. Do a factory reset if possible with only minimal apps reinstalled to see if still getting hot.

Definitely do as tardus suggested. Or at least try to figure out if you have an app that is going rogue.

My first G4 would randomly get warm, and battery life was not great. But I had copied all ~130 apps over from my last phone, many of which were old versions.

On my replacement, I just installed the apps I needed. It has run cooler, with better battery life. I believe the hardware replacement was not much of a factor, but bringing my apps under control was the real cause of the improvement.

That doesn't mean don't install apps. But having a ton all immediately installed at once makes troubleshooting quite difficult.

Ok so apparently it's the phone because after doing a reset it shuts off even more now. So I guess I will have to exchange it for another one. I really like this phone and I think it takes real nice pics. Hopefully the next one won't have this problem. Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated

Good luck Terri and I'm glad you found the problem. If it's any consolation the chances of getting another bad one is very small.

I also have this issue on my T-Mobile G4. Youtube is one of the apps that is guaranteed to heat up my phone. The other one is Pocket Casts. I am also getting the random reboots after wiping the phone. I also noticed a huge performance drop as the phone gets to this state. It gets to the point that the status bar and the home button disappears and I have to hold the power button and hope I can reboot the phone. I had T-Mobile replace the phone twice without really understanding what was causing it until now. I'm noticing that whenever these performance drops happen it's when the processor is heating up. I didn't think the heat was a factor until now because I owned a G3 and it would tell you when it was heating up. I really regret buying the G4.

Mine heats up all the time. I just learned to deal with it and keep it out of direct sunlight.

I realized my freezing and super lag are due to heating. I was having an awful time just navigating through this forum. I removed the back cover and held the phone on front of the air conditioning vent for a few seconds. After that the phone flew through websites, apps, photos, and videos like mad with no stutters, skips or hesitation whatsoever. Maybe the leather does hold in a little too much heat.

Hi guys, new this forum. I have an LG G4 as well, and notice that it does get warm near the buttons and earpiece. I am not too sure if this would be considered hot, but what app are you guys using to determine the temperature level of the G4? Also, what temperature level is considered hot? Thanks!

Maybe the leather does hold in a little too much heat.

I actually found that my phone got warmer overall (as opposed to "spot" heating) when I switched from the black leather to the Spigen Neo Hybrid... just a bit, but still noticeable.

Same here. At idle, the phone heats up. A lot more than my G3. I ended up returning phone for bad battery life. Had one day. Next phone ran hot, glitchy touch screen, very slow charging and oh yah, bad battery life. Returned right away and reactivated my G3. Much happier. LG dropped the ball.

I ended my trial at 2 G4s. The first had touchscreen issues. The second got so hot when I used my camera a lot in Orlando that I literally couldn't not put the screen to my ear because it burned. I am using the G3 again until there is an update or something. I LOVED the camera. So much better than the G3.

Sadly, I'm outside the 30 day return period and I sold my G3 to T-Mobile. By the way, I've done 2 replacements with T-Mobile so I'm on my 3rd G4. I miss my LG G3 so much now.

Update: I just spoke to T-Mobile support and they told me that because I did multiple warranty exchanges, they will let me swap it with a different phone, meaning I can jump back to the G3. So I'll be jumping off the G4 bandwagon.
