I got the Nexus 4 because i spend a lot of time in Honduras. I can change out chips get monthly contracts in US and HN. Ill leave behind my verizon contract and Iphone. (Pretty sure about T mobile in US.) I liked iPhone because it worked so well with Macbook and not giving up Macbook. So steep learning curve. I am reading posts and guides. Got phone unlocked and newest 4.2.2 installed. But what next? Iphone has simple interface through iTunes to add/delete apps. can i do that on Nexus? with music too? i dont know what pre-installed apps are junk and which i need. i can text via wifi in Honduras with iPhone and that is useful. Nexus?

And i want it to look cool like some of those other screen shots posted. so can you point me somewhere or help me to next step.

thanks.

Android equivalent of iTunes for app is google Play Store. There will be an icon for it on you homescreen when you first start it up, but if not, you can find in the app drawer.

The first thing I would suggest if you want to pretty up the phone is downloading a third party launcher app like Nova or Apex. These are available in the play store. They will allow you a lot of customization of your homescreen etc.

There are plenty of apps to text via wifi. I use Whatsapp.

A long press is likely to offer up options to do something.

Approach a third-party launcher like Nova or Apex with caution. It will get your head spinning with its options.

Don't do anything yet, just download your favorite apps and use the phone as is for a few weeks. Figure out how android works, awe what you like and what you'd like to change, then start researching those specific issues.

The best way to shorted your learning curve is to have someone show you how to do whatever you want to do. The problem is that most people don't have anyone hanging around that can show them stuff, as well as you not even know what you need to be shown. When I was new to android, I found youtube videos very helpful. Go over there on your mac and search for things like getting started with android, android jelly bean, best android apps, switching from iphone to android, etc... It's amazing all the stuff you can find there.

Thanks. decided to slow down as i got into root, etc. i have a son in college who abhors the iPhone trend and can help me out. what about music? can i just do file transfer? or do files have to be converted? appreciate your help.

Just did a quick search. I'm assuming you want your iTunes songs on your N4. Easy enough, but a bit of a process. Oh, and welcome to Android! Way to unlock it right away. Now you'll never have to worry about moving anything off your internal sd card should you decide to venture into the wonderful world of custom roms/kernels/mods:cool:

There's a much easier way to get your iTunes music on to your Nexus: Google Music Manager. Download and install it to your Mac, run it, and let it do its thing. It will upload all of your DRM-free music* from iTunes to Google Music. It might take a while depending on how much you have and how fast your internet connection is. Once it's on Google Music (in the cloud), you can then either stream it over the air using the native music player, or you can download it to your phone for off-line play using the same app. No need to mess with cables or anything!

Oh, and don't worry about root right now. That's a whole 'nother kettle of fish that I recommend you ignore until you're familiar with Android. Chances are you'll never need or want to root your Nexus. :)

*Music purchased in the last couple years on ITMS will be DRM-free, but music bought before 2010 or so will be protected. To check what's what, in iTunes add the file type to the various visible columns in your library, and look for "m4p." This is the old, DRM-protected iTunes format, and Music Manager can't upload these. You used to be able to convert these via something called iTunes Plus, but that's gone and you'll need to subscribe to Apple's iCloud service to convert them sadly.

I have found that my Android with the help of apps that I can download from Google Play, that my phone can do everything that I used to Jailbreak my iPhone to be able to do.

As for music, I too have started using Google Music. I have over 13,000 songs in iTunes and all have them have been converted to DRM free versions through iTunes Match by deleting the matched copies and downloading everything. It's avery slow process though, getting songs that have to be uploaded to Google music to upload. I have 440 songs uploaded. I haven't been trying to upload them too much because the Google Music app slows down my MacBook.

Since the OP has a Macbook, he can use Android File Transfer (it's free to use, search Google for it) and just transfer the music over. If they are in MP3 format, just copy them over. You can read up on the Google site to see what music formats it supports.
