HELP -- Does the EVO 4G LTE have poor 3G performance?

My wife and I both have the EVO 4G LTE phones. We love the phones, but we've had severe issues getting reception and keeping it in places that we had no problems with on our old EVO 4G and Epic 4G phones. (All of this is on the 3G network)

I've called Sprint multiple times and their response is "bring it in". So we've brought them in and had them do their software stuff, and we're still having the same exact reception issues as before.

It appears as though the phones cannot hold a signal. The bars will jump from zero to three or four while sitting perfectly still. While trying to download facebook info, the phone will often give the "loading" symbol on Facebook, but then give a connection error.

We tried our phones next to my in-law's Galaxy IIS phones and their phones (purchased around the same time as ours) on webpages and all loaded just fine. My wife's simply returned "no connection" errors after trying to load.

Sprint's response has been that it is a network issue. I don't see how this is the case if older model phones are picking up a signal and loading it while the EVO 4G LTE is not.

I have asked them about replacing these phones with different and more reliable phones, and the best they will do is a refurbished EVO 4G LTE, which seems idiotic at best. I wish we'd have returned them in 14 days, but we assumed our issues were truly network related until we started noticing others with SPRINT phones were having no problems and we were not.

I'm at wit's end with SPRINT and incredibly angry at paying big bucks every month for phones and phone service that won't even connect. Sprint has said "we don't guarantee the phones" but they sure do promote the heck out of them, don't they.

So is this simply an issue of my wife and I being snakebit twice, or do the EVO LTE phones have 3G issues? If they do, is this a design, software, or other issue?

Thanks.

Sprint keeps telling me it's a network issue as well. They say we are upgrading our towers coast to coast, that it what is wrong with your phone. Why then do the bars go up & down in the same location? From 2 bars to almost a full bar just sitting? This happens in a lot of locations, 3g of course, in a big area, not in a limited coverage area.

It is a network issue,, I could not stream anything for a whole week at one point and I found out sprint was doing upgrades in my area during that time. After that week my 3g was better than ever.

My question is why the EVO 4G LTE won't connect consistently to a 3G network when other phones on Sprint in the same exact location will.

I own both htc EVO LTE and the Verizon Samsung s3 and my friend has the s3 on sprint. On a couple of diff occasions I have done speedtests with the app and website and my EVO LTE vs his sprint s3 come up with the same 3g speeds give or take a few kbs. My s3 from Verizon does have intermittent connectivity issues at times connecting to any kind of data which my old s2 had on sprint. There fore leads me to conclude that the connectivity for the s3 is not a carrier problem bit a company problem which upsets me cause it has been persistant since the og s1. Luckily that's just my work phone. The 3g issues must be cause of the roll pit of sprint vision and tower upgrades that have been going on. I remember this one guy from this forums to try doing speed tests at night and ill see its faster cause less ppl are using the bandwith. The EVO LTE in my opinion is a great phone.

I have the Evo LTE and the Galaxy S3 for Sprint, and the 3G speeds (slow!) are about the same.
The Evo gets data in areas where the GS3 does not...and the Evo also reports stronger signal when they are sitting right next to each other.
So yeah, blame the network...
Also the latest over the air update is supposed to have cured a number of issues with the Evo.

best,

My 3g was terrible until the recent ota update. Post update my 3g has been pretty rockin. No dropped signals and much faster speeds.

My Evo has been awful since day 1. I wish I would have returned it but I'm a year into my contract. I'm thinking about paying the cancellation fee just to get rid of the phone and move to a network that actually has good service. I'd love to say it's the service by me, but my wife's S3 outperforms my phone in every way imaginable.

I was with a friend yesterday who has the S3 on Sprint. His phone showed the 4G and my 4g LTE only showed 3G.

Happens all the time when you are near the edge of coverage. My wife and I have HTC EVO 4G LTEs, two kids have S3's, and one has a LG Mach. When near the edge of coverage there are always times when 1, 2, or 3 of us don't have 4G. Doesn't matter which phone.

Also, are you sure your EVO is set to CDMA/LTE? Probably is, but have to ask.

Our family experience with 3G is that it is about the same across all our devices. There is no big difference between any of our phones.

Obviously, though, everyone's experience is different, just throwing our observations into the mix.

So just out of curiosity do your HTC phones sometimes show 4G while at the same time your kids S3 show 3g?

Yep, that's exactly what I was saying. It isn't about brand. In fact the last time this happened, one EVO and one S3 were showing 4G, and the other EVO and S3 were showing 3G.

Our city isn't completely lit up with LTE yet, so it is still spotty in a lot of places. In locations around town where there is a good LTE signal, we all get 4G without issue. And in the spots where we typically lose 4G back to 3G were all lose the signal within seconds of one another.

Are you using the Connections Optimizer? We have that turned on for both our EVO4GLTEs.

Thanks Mikey47 for the the information. I am using the connections optimizer. I was thinking of trying to get sprint to allow me to try the S3 before I move all my family phones to ATT or Verizon, But I guess from your experience that would be a waste of time and energy.
