Just got an S8 a couple weeks ago. Ever since, during calls Im getting random ding dong-ish notifications ....with no actual notifications. There is no rhyme or reason I can determine.

Happens randomly every 1-3 mins, intermittently. By that i mean not every 60 seconds OR 120 Seconds. Just random.

I have searched everywhere and have everything off on the phone that i could find. Eg. notification reminders = off, NFC = off etc etc.

Anyone else experience this? btw my phone is canadian with telus.

Please help - driving me nuts!!

Are they your default notification sound or are they beeps during the call? Unless your carrier disabled it, you should be able to turn off notifications during calls (at least to test if it's a notification from an app/system process or if it's a network/call sound) by going into the Phone app, Settings, Call Alerts, and turning off the toggle for NOTIFY DURING CALLS.

If you have WiFi calling it might also make a sound if the signal is poor and the phone is about to switch to mobile and viceversa.

Its like a default notification that one would receive with a txt message. like a quick "bling bong" lol so hard to describe over typing . The only thing I didnt try was to disable all notifications during calls. WIll try that, which Im sure may very well fix it, but I'd rather received actual txt message notifications, but not "ghost" notifications. thanks for the response.

Let's start with that. If that helps, then at least we can rule out call/carrier notifications and work our way into figuring this one out.

Also try seeing if there are any Bluetooth devices trying to connect (that would probably also cause 'phantom' notifications even when not in a call, but still worth a shot).

Will report back. Also confirmed I dont have any minute minder settings so thats not it. Oh, my bluetooth is always turned off so not that either. Thanks man!

edit - in the meantime, i just confirmed the tone name. Its called "Letter" from the notification sound options...and also confirming i didnt have that selected for any sms or other notifications.weird

That's the default notification sound. If you change that in the Sounds settings, that should change (if it doesn't, then that's weirder but would help pin-point the culprit...if you know which app uses that tone specifically).

WEll, i have disabled all notifications during calls and havent experienced the issue...yet. time will tell. Bummer that I'll be missing txt messages during calls until i sort this out.

What happens if you enable them again? Also, don't remember if you tried it, but if the notifications are the issue, there is a way to see your notification history (not content, but at least apps that have generated notifications). You could try that if you haven't and see if the culprit shows there.

I was just about to type this I have an app installed called recent notifications from the play store and it shows me all my notifications that I've seen and/or missed maybe it would show up in there?

Not sure how that app works, but maybe? The way I know how to do it is by using a widget on a launcher that supports 'Activities' (like Nova). I would assume the app you downloaded access the same system data, but can't say for sure.

Put the phone in safe mode. If it stops, it's an app that you downloaded. If it's still going on, it's probably a problem with the os, requiring a factory reset.

tried re-enabling notifications, and alert came back. Also installed the recent notifications app mentinoed above, and just got off a conference call and a few dingdongs occurred (only I can hear it). The recnt notfications app doesnt show anything other then alerts Im aware of, nothing timestamped close to the time I hear the noise. Frustrating. I should also note, that Im running the same apps as I had coming from my S7Edge which was also on oreo. No new apps installed because I simply used the smartswitch app to do everything. Also runniing nova prime same past phone. UGH.

So - at this point I just need to somehow determine what the friggen "letter" notfiication is assigned to (Nothing from what I can tell). When I go into options and disable notifications during calls, no more noise. Worst case I'll live with that option, but you know. Appreciate the help guys.

I'd start with Safe Mode, too. If the beeping stops, then at least you know it's not a system app.

Also, if that fixes your problem AND you just want to be notified of texts... you could use a texting app that supports it. Textra, for instance, does. (The option to play a sound during a call, regardless of the Phone app setting).

I was receiving unknown notifications and this fixed it for me. I still get get all of my desired notifications. Settings>Accessibility >Notifications and turn it off. I believe this setting allows repeat notifications. You will also see a list of apps that can be turned on or off if you do not want to turn the entire section off.
