For me I typically keep all of my contacts in Gmail/Google so I can sync them to any device anytime and I also keep their photos attached that way too.

Look for an "export" option on your old phone and a "import" on your new phone. Android saves contacts as a .vcf (or something like that). Like mentioned above, ditch locally saved contacts and get them in the cloud!

Right, there are numerous ways to do it on the phone itself.

Back them to Google.
Back then to another account
Many carriers provide contact back up
Move them to SD card
Move them via Bluetooth
Move them via wifi direct.
