HELP HTC ONE or GALAXY S4?!

Maybe it's because I came to the One from an iPhone 5 and have only owned a handful of Android devices, most recently the Note 2, but I don't find the button placement to be that horrible. I do hate it when I get the on-screen menu button so you do have a point there, but I feel the pros of the One outweigh the cons in the end.

Not to hijack the thread, but the on screen menu button is not HTCs fault. It is either the app developers for not updating their app to the current model, or Google for changing the model to begin with.

... And at the same time my htc One has no build flaws, nor did my EVO lte . Now my daughter's s3 on the other hand is flimsy with a cracked screen from an 8 to 12" fall. My aluminum evo took fall after fall without a ding or scratch and helped in my decision to get the aluminum htc One

Be honest here, your one experience with your HTC One and your daughter's experience with one S3 hardly constitutes a comparative study of the build quality of the HTC One. Google HTC ONE defects and see what you get. Here's an example HTC One Has Many Manufacturing Defects! | NeoGalaxia

How is updating an APP responsible for HTC's design and screen button placement on the current phone? Are you saying that Google made HTC design the ONE as it appears today?

...but your claim to Samsung fame is totally valid. I do check reviews and comparison's before i do buy only so i know what issues to look for but at the end of the day its my own experience i value the most. Not just with my Htc One either... Hero, Og Evo, Htc Evo lte and the Htc One as well as the Instinct, Intercept and S3 offerings from Samsung.

So if my own exp is that Htc puts out a good product, why would i read a review that says otherwise and just accept it to be true? I wouldn't and no one else should either. Get out there and test them for yourself

I had a little time with the One in the store and at a family members house. I went S4 after being a 5-6 year long iPhone user.
The ringtones and notification noises on the One ...kind of...aren't good. ( I know that sounds silly but they really are annoying )

Both phones seem to get a lot of negativity.
The S4 lags. its an overblown issue, but it lags a tiny bit here and there but not enough to make an issue out of it.
S4 OS takes half the storage on the 16GB model. non issue for most. I have a boat load of songs and pics and added 50-60 apps and have 5.9GB left. I don't even have an SD card.
I don't use any of the waving or eye features. I think they are dumb and half baked at best. (personal opinion)
Battery life is awesome on S4 for me. My last battery cycle was 24.5 hours with 3.5 hours of screen time and had 30% battery left.
Charging the S4 is awesome. I can charge from 0% to 100% in about an hour. LOVE that. I don't own a backup battery. I don't need one.

You already know the positives and negatives of the HTC so no need to list anything.

All I can add from here. I love the S4 even with its minor imperfections. To me it feels great in the hand. LOVE the 5" screen. I like TouchWiz. I am new to android but I know some hate TW.

This is my story with HTC one...never bought an android before..did bash it a few times in the past...but was ofcourse following news it was improving with every updated software...so i was looking in May for a phone for my wife to replace her sorry BB 9900(that bb7 was a horrible software like its predecessors).. So i started to think of s3 because it is cheaper now or the note II..i heard of htc one release and how people have compared its looks to z10 (i own the z10 by the way through work and its a nice device..much better than crappy bb7) and i kinda agreed with the comparison to a certain extent as most pictures i saw were front shots...so i didnt pay attention to htc one in april..then i went shopping for samsung...i entered the shop and we saw the htc one...our jaws dropped...we couldnt believe how gorgeous the phone is...so we decided immediately to buy it but guess what out of stock...i had to wait a couple of weeks until i received one...it was an experience of not noticing anything else once we say the One...sorry..in real life the z10 is not close enough in looks to this beauty...so i used the phone for few weeks...the more i used it since it was my wife's the more i loved it...its just the perfect fusion between hardware and software...so guess what...i decided to get one for myself and i got it few days back

This is a first ever myself and wife own the same unit at the same time..

I had issues in the past with android reputation for devices being laggy..the oem software being cluttered..etc..etc...but oh my...this htc one has none of those issues (where samsung actually could)..the look and the beauty of this screen..imo the screen is natural and gorgeous on the htc one...its just the perfect blend...the sound on this thing is amazing...not to diss BBs as i like the brand, its not only about the apps which they lack...top android sets now compete an offer the best feel in the market...
To samsung, this HTC one is a killer...i think the htc one is a good outcome for iphone owners but not for samsung for 2 reasons...one of the sticking points for iphone owners was always the premium feel for iphone..tick box here for htc one against samsung...and the other point was the constant hatred between samsung and apple all the way to courts so their users also became haters of each other which has played nicely into htc one favor...many iphone users wanted to switch to android to try it out and many didnt want to because samsung were leading the oem front for android...but now..they have HTC one and some have shifted already...
I dont think samsung saw this one coming...they were probably blind sided big time...their whole marketing campaigns were aimed at bashing iphones it seems so out of nowhere they got hit by an Android oem which they were not prepared for...it serves those copying cheating scums right (i still love their flat screen tvs but the issue with paying taiwanese students to bad mouth htc one was on the top really)...for someone switching from S3 to s4 is not a good enough reason..but the htc one can make any potential buyer of s4 completely forget there os another brand like it happened to us...pictures on net dont do good enough service to HTC one until you see it and feel it...the software is beautifully a minimalist and very snappy...i understand an acknowledge that batteries in general will not be able to match the powerhouses that we see in the market today...those phones are almost like tvs and something has to give in if you want the full experience...
In a nutshell, we are both happy with the HTC one...i even added the MS exchange account to this phone although i have the z10.. I hardly use it anymore...HTC one is a whole level above anything bb has to offer nowadays, imo...i
As fro s4, im not even the slightest interested to test it out...this is a true testimony to HTC one as most reviews in the past used to compare the iphones to galaxies and now we see many comparing the One with s4..

If you want a compact, good looking and metal body phone then go for One but if ya want a smartphone laden with innovative features, faster processor and latest Android OS go for GS4.

I don't necessarily want either. I want good software aesthetics, smooth performance, good hardware features (speakers, low-light photography ability etc) and an overall good user experience. The S4 lacks in all these departments apart from the last. That said, I do like the removable battery, daylight camera performance, build quality and screen size of the S4.

As for build material... I don't really care. Sure, the One will look better when I'm showing off to iPhone-owning friends but otherwise, I'd take build-quality/quality-control over a classier design, anyday.

Tom

PS. Innovative features? Gimmicky and unhelpful (apart from Air-preview). Faster CPU? You wouldn't tell based on performance! Latest Android version? There's practically no difference (we already have gesture typing, daydream is useless, even the S4 misses out on photosphere so lockscreen wigets are the only useful addition), and the One should be updated soon.

Android apps are supposed to have the menu button in the app. That's an ics design standard. When a developer fails to update their app the black bar menu button is shown on phones following modern android design principles. This happens on the last two Nexus phones as well but it's less noticeable because they always have a black bar with the back, home, and multitasking buttons shown. Google wants menu buttons taken off phones and put into apps so HTC designed their phone around that idea. In summary, when you see the black menu bar it means one thing, that app is not following current Android design. It's no fault of HTC that the app developer declines to update their app to what Google wants.

You said it, i don't take all the gestures as no more then mere hoopla.. They seem cool though.. Lol

My opinion, I 'll get a HTC One, if you want a smoother UI, better build quality, and better speaker then go for One. S4 is a good phone, but I don't need those air view/ gesture features and from my feeling, it's not surprising, it just like an advanced version of galaxy s3. My opinion :)

Like a lot of people have stated, there really is no definitive best. You have to list the pro's and cons of each phone and rank them to your requirements. It really is a tough choice, I am looking for a new phone and am having a tough time deciding too. Like the removable battery and SDcard slot on the Sammy, but like the fact that the One has a brighter screen, sounds like it is smoother and has a FM radio . I might just have to wait to see what Moto brings out later this year.

You shouldn't, you've already bought the phone. My point was that the OP is looking for phone. He should not take your, or my, experience with one or two phones as gospel regarding defects, operation, quality or reliability. Your comments about your phones really don't add much to the overall discussion about the reported defects of the HTC One. He should be given the totality of information and decide.

So the good fortune i have had with my htc products should not be spoke of but your own Samsung experiences should be heard. Maybe you should take another look at the Op, he's asking for our opinions of the Htc One which he also has

I bought the S3 when it was new and I've had the S4 since it was introduced and I have never had a crack, scratch or negative build quality issue.

Its as simple as this. We buy a phone, we like it or we dont. Then there are those of us who come to forums to express our likes and dislikes. If someone is curious before buying a phone and comes here to see some reviews (generally speaking) than i'll offer mine. I for one think the build/material quality of the One is great and its part of the reason i bought it. If your opinion is that Samsung made a great phone in the Galaxy S4 well thats great too. I happen to think its a nice phone as well.

HTC One takes up 5GB out of 32GB out of the box. I have 16 albums, and 45 apps. Still have 25GB free. No SD Card. Not an option.
I don't use any of the waving or eye features. I think they are dumb and half baked at best. (personal opinion)
I concur with the above.
Battery life is awesome on S4 for me. My last battery cycle was 24.5 hours with 3.5 hours of screen time and had 30% battery left.
Battery life in my One was 37% after 21hrs, 33 minutes with 5hrs of on screen time.
Charging the S4 is awesome. I can charge from 0% to 100% in about an hour. LOVE that. I don't own a backup battery. I don't need one.
Takes about an hour to charge the HTC One from 35%.

You already know the positives and negatives of the HTC so no need to list anything.

I've had the s4 and the one. My opinion? Get the note 2. You'll get used to the screen size.

Um, you did see the part where I said, "He should not take your, or my, experience with one or two phones..." I never said you shouldn't be heard. But I posted a site that listed build quality issues with the HTC ONE and you replied with declarative statements about two phones you own as rebuttal. I then asked you to be honest and admit that there were problems with HTC ONE build quality. I never suggested, or meant, that you shouldn't pass along your experience with phones you own. My point was and is, your, or my, individual experience with a phone is not representative of the totality of the information. The OP should look at the numerous reported problems with build quality of the HTC ONE (and the S4, although they are very few compared to the ONE) not just rely on one or two phone owners' opinions. If I came across as criticizing you for stating your experience with your phone I apologize.
