Help me choose between rooted and not rooted phone

I am looking to purchase my first smartphone, a Droid 2. I am trying to choose between used phones from two reputable sellers. Since I am a newcomer to using the Android system, would it be better to purchase the phone that has been rooted or not been rooted? I don't know whether there would be a steeper learning curve with a rooted phone and greater ease of use with a non-rooted phone. My cell phone plan also has very limited data. Would I be able to manage the data usage adequately on a phone that has not been rooted?

Thanks,
Marcia

If you have the choice of a phone that's been rooted, I'd say go for that. There's actually little difference between the two except that rooting allows you to remove bloatware from your system, freeing up memory, also to install apps that let you do cool stuff like take screenshots and tether your phone to your computer.

I would advise against getting a moto phone if, and this is the big if, you want to root and rom. Moto phones are great, so don't get me wrong, but their phones have locked AND ENCRYPTED bootloaders. Also there is the recent trend to fix the root exploits and load a new bootloader preventing you from flashing a previous rootable version, at least with the d2global and others I think.

SO,
If you ARE interested in being a part of the rooting and romming comunity, you would be better off staying away from MOTO. Unless, of course, you are looking for a challenge...

Ive rooted and romed the original droid, droid 2, droid x, and droid x 2, Ive never liked the factory apps they put on there but hey it was a learning opportunity and ive bricked a phone or too
