Help me understand, is the Note 8 a niche device?

I agree with you. Just another thing to bi*** about. If you don't plan on buying one or don't intent on buying one go to another phone page.
I had an online "argument" with someone who was saying you could get a phone just as good as the Note 8 for half the price by just buying a Mate 9, "and it has a 4000mah battery". I said "how's the pen on that thing?" . He said he doesn't care - has no use for a pen. I asked "then why in the world are you comparing it to a Note? Why not compare it to an S8, S8+, or S8 Active (which also has a 4000mah battery and no pen)?

This was in the comments on a Facebook promotion of the Note 8. I just dont get people like that. If you have no use for the pen, you are arguing about the wrong phone, and with the wrong people.

Because it's not worth the upgrade from an S8/S8+ which is arguably the best Android you can get at this moment.

If you have already bought the S8, is the Note 8 worlds different from the S8 that, after paying the $750/$850 for your S8/S8+, is it worth it to pay whatever you need to buy a Note 8??

IMO... No. If the S-Pen is really important to you and need it now, then yes go ahead.

Besides the S-Pen... the dual cameras and larger memory and even the bigger screen size would normally be considered normal updates to the next year phones... Rumor is in January, the S9 is going to be released and what that will probably be is a Note 8 with dual cameras minus the S-pen... and hopefully FPS in better location so if you've bought an S8 and it's not even 6 months old why get a Note for just the pen if you don't need it. You want the rest, get the S9 in about 4 or 5 months.

Now if you don't have an S8... then a Note 8 is a option if you want what will be probably the #1 or #2 of the year. But then there is the argument if it's worth getting one... right now... at $950 if you don't have any other way to shave a few bucks off new or get an S8/S8+ for about $300 cheaper.

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying it is not worth an upgrade from the s8/s8+ either. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is not meant to be an upgrade from those phones. It's an upgrade from the prior note phones! I don't buy the S line phones because I'm a note user.

People who bought the s8/s8+ need to stop complaining that is not worth the upgrade to the note 8.

When I went to Best Buy to see and play with the Note 8 the moment they had them displayed... I spent my time holding the phone to compare the size and feel of the phone against the S8+ and tried out the camera... then spent all my time playing with the S-Pen software ang then left.

I spent zero time playing with anything else. Why? Because the rest is pretty much exactly like an S8. That's how it felt. That's how it is.

Exactly. The problem is, you're hearing this from tech bloggers who cover 100 phones a year, or phone jumpers who have to have the latest.

For most people the Note 8 is a major leap forward, and that high price tag needs to be put into perspective. For everyday customers, as long as this one doesn't blow up, they'll be keeping this phone 3/4 years, making it a long term investment.

Phone enthusiasts still think they're the center of the world.

The 3/4 year thing has changed alot now with jump on demand... I find that many people are upgrading 1x or 2x a year. Personally, I just upgrade whenever I feel the new device is worthwhile. I've owned every note since inception and have already pre ordered this one.

So far the majority of comments have been what the rest of this Note forum consists of... comparing an niche device to a mainstream device. I'm still failing to see how people think comparing a niche device to anything else but another niche device or even the old version of this device, is supposed to be any kind of valid argument.

Are there any other niche devices out there to compare to? I know there's a few out there with a stylus but idk their specs and such.

But that's my point... I don't see any comparisons or talk about those that should probably come a lot closer in comparison based on what the device was aimed to do. Instead it's a mess of apples, oranges, lemons, and watermelons.

I see your point. Why compare devices that aren't necessarily intended to appeal to the same group of users? Why compare S8 and Note 8?

If you are on TMobile yes, but most of the World is not on TMobile. And most of them are not in the forums. Most everyone keeps their phone for at least a year, it's just that we aren't those people.

The S8/S8+ I feel is the better phone to compare to the rest. But when it comes down to the title of the best phone and "Flagship" versus "Flagship," the Note 8 will probably be Samsungs best and it's flagship phone. So it will be used for comparison.

Just because it's got an S-Pen doesn't make it a lock in for the best phone in the market. The V30 or upcoming Pixel or any phone could take the title by just being an overall better phone.

Thats not the topic of the thread. We're not discussing "best phone" or "best flagship", or best anything for that matter.

Well, I think all the Youtubers are reviewing the Note 8 and for most part agreeing that the phone is a great phone... possibly the best phone of the year.

But most all reviews I have seen myself have said that the general buyer is better off with the S8 or S8+ that checks all the boxes plus currently $200-300 cheaper than the Note if you don't need the S-Pen... right?

So they are basically saying even if the Note 8 is the best phone to date made... you're better off with the S8 or S8 Plus if you don't need the pen. They are basically telling you it's a niche phone and save your money and get the second best phone of the year... the S8.

Did I just make things more confusing?

No, you didn't make it more confusing, you just restated what everyone has been reading/saying/arguing about for the last two months. Again, that's now what, IMO, the OP is looking for.

Mod Note: Posts cleaned up. We can't seem to stay on topic and address the OP's issue so we'll take a break for awhile.

I get what you're saying OP, but I think the challenge is what category then would you put the Note 8 in? To me, the note is, primarily, an enterprise/work device because of the stylist. If you're not going to be using the pen very often, then that's an empty feature. But what else could/would you compare it to if that's the case. What else would be considered an enterprise type of device with the same features, i.e. pen?

I think you would need at least 2 or 3 like type devices before you could break it out in it's own category, no?
