Help me with shield tv update - I can't select it

About a week ago my 2017 shield TV popped up a prompt to upgrade. Sweet I thought... but I have a weird problem. I can't select the option for update now or remind me later. The upgrade prompt covers the whole screen, but the main screen is behind it still. Both remotes move the main screen around when I do up, down or confirm. I can't find any way to select the options in the upgrade prompt. Restart brings back the main screen and then a few minutes later same deal. I can't find anything online on this issue, so hoping that someone here has had this problem and found a solution to share.
